American Idol – Gone

It was a night of busts on 'Idol': Scotty busted out a terrific tune to the delight of us all while Jacob and his two performances simply busted.

- Season 10, Episode 33 - "The Top 5 Perform"

If there’s one thing the ‘ole American Idol machine does, and does well, it chugs along relentlessly. Nothing is going to get in its way. Good performances, bad performances … it just keeps a-comin’ at you, rolling on down the tracks.

And that’s exactly what it did on this “Now And Then” edition where the Idols performed two songs, one from the last few years, one from “back in the day” host Ryan Seacrest reminded us.

Overall? Not a bad show. A bit screechy and screamy throughout at times, but everyone did well enough.

Well … that is except for Jacob Lusk.

Jacob’s first tune — Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks’ hit “No Air” — got him a date with the fog machine. And the enveloping fog apparently caused him to get all animated and swishy and virtual crotch-grabby. Indeed, Jacob brought out his inner diva with this tune and, between the quirky moves and his pointing at me during the song, all I could do was guffaw at my television screen. The poor guy got swallowed up, then lost in comical over-performance.

But, wait! There’s more! His second tune, Nazareth’s “Love Hurts” was infinitely better. Okay … maybe not infinitely better, but there was a point in the song toward the end — for about 3.3 seconds — where it was good. You have to admit, though: 3.3 seconds of good performance was an improvement compared to his first outing. (Both rather painful videos, the worst of the night, are showcased below for your ogling pleasure.)

As mentioned, the rest of the Idols did rather well for the most part. There were the requisite tears from James Durbin, the smokey chords from Haley Reinhart busting out an unreleased Lady Gaga track (done rather well, I might add) and we even saw Lauren Alaina bust out of her shell with Carrie Underwood’s “Flat On The Floor,” a welcome and exuberant performance from her.

But it was Scott McCreery and his “Gone” that brought the house down. Scotty worked the song into a frenzy (video below) and the crowd followed suit. Randy Jackson boasted Haley’s “House Of The Rising Sun” (her final performance) the best of the night, but I beg to differ: Scotty walked away with that honor, hands down.

Who hits the road? That’s easy.

“… tell me how you gonna be without me …” Jacob shouted at me during his first tune. My answer? Pretty damned easily, once he’s gone.

Jacob definitely bombed, but man, James was awful on his first song too. I would be happy with either of them getting eliminated.

There’s something about Lauren that is so sleepy, even when she’s belting out these big songs. Her eyes are always half closed, and her dancing consists entirely of swiveling her hips. I think she has a great voice, but I don’t get any energy from her performance.

I’m hoping either Scott or Haley wins. Haley is consistent from week to week – she’s going to do her sexy growling and squeaking thing, which people seem to enjoy. I like it when she doesn’t overdo it.

Scott can be safe and boring (“Always on my mind” = zzzz) and bring the house down (“Gone”) all in the same week. I’ve said before, I’m not a country music fan, but I loved his performance of “Gone,” and if he wins, he deserves it.

. . . . .

There was a lot wrong with James’ efforts, Ruby. But if I would have harped on them, it would have been me being a whiny boy whining … know what I mean?

I think next week I’m going to get down and dirty and rip it up. Don’t want to end up becoming “American Idol judgey”.

Haley won’t win. she won’t have the support. Scotty will not beat out the sob story or the tears or the back story James has in his corner. I could be wrong, but … I’m not.

I hereby give you the option to come back at the end of the season and let me know which way you would like me to prepare my crow in the event I am incorrect.

See, I missed that because I skip the sob stories and just watch the performances and (sometimes) the judging. I don’t even bother watching the results shows, since I can read your posts to find out who was eliminated.

I have no idea what James’s backstory is, so I have no sympathy for him. To me, he just seems like a wannabe rocker with a decent voice, a baby face, and a hideous wardrobe. As the daughter of a virtuoso rock guitarist, I’m not easily impressed by rock musicians of any kind, so maybe I’m being harsh on him.

Read the headline. I thought Idol was gone. To bad. Maybe one day.

One day carole … one day …

Boy Michael, too bad your article bought on a comment like carole’s. How stupid.

Anyway, I would tend to agree with you mostly but I think it was a tie between Haley’s performances and Scotty’s Gone for best of the night. However, I thought his You were always on my mind was totally boring. Of course, it takes a lot to make that song interesting.

If Jacob doesn’t get voted off tonight, there is something screwy in the voters heads.

Maureen:

No worries. Carole’s comment made me guffaw from down deep. And I needed that laugh. It was very therapeutic. I’m happy now.

Haley was close … but I tipped over to Scotty’s side of the fence …

I have saved this to my hard drive, made a back-up on a thumb drive, and stored it on another computer in an undisclosed off-site location in case of catastrophic loss.

I agree James is great, and has the best “package” [back story, on screen emotions, engaging personality, etc.] behind him. But Lee beat out Crystal, Kris beat out Adam, and, never to be forgotten, Taylor beat out Daughtry. Scotty has a good shot at the title, whatever that means in the final analysis.

Nyela:

I think you need to check your hard drive.

I picked Taylor to win. I was behind him all the way.

I documented it – and it’s still there and here on CliqueClack – that Adam wouldn’t win.

And you know my stance on chicks with tattoos in the history of Idol.

Why do you doubt me? Why? … Why … ???

Sounds like you have a good track record Michael. LOL!
