Quotation Marks – The Six Feet Under (dead)dition

Some interesting quotations came out of the 'Six Feet Under' run on HBO. Careful though: Some are not for the faint of heart.

When you think of Six Feet Under — the seminal Alan Ball/HBO offering that helped set the standard for quality cable offerings — one of the last things you’d think is that it’s a quotable program.

I didn’t view it that way originally, but it certainly contains some interesting quotations nevertheless. The ones I’ve listed below struck chords with me. The series was chock-full of them.

Any stand out for you?

“Pilot”

“What the hell?” – David
“There’s been an accident. The new hearse is totaled. Your father is dead. Your father is dead, and my pot roast is ruined.” – Ruth

“The Will”

“What am I, some knocked-up Victorian waif that has to stay hidden from view?” – Claire

“The Foot”

“I don’t want any children.” – Brenda
“Wow! Who said anything about children?” – Nate
“I was referring to you. ” – Brenda

“An Open Book”

“This is my … uh, my girlfriend, Brenda.” – Nate
“I prefer the term ‘fuck puppet.'” – Brenda

“The Room”

“Thank you, Nate, I appreciate your honesty, wrapped as it was in such a bouquet of condescension.” – David

“Brotherhood”

“Sorry, there was an accident on the 405. Both cars totaled. Should have stopped to hand out cards.” – Nate

“Life’s Too Short”

“You know what I find interesting? If you lose a spouse, you’re called a widow or a widower. If you’re a child and you lose your parents, then you’re an orphan. But what’s the word to describe a parent who loses a child? I guess that’s just too fucking awful to even have a name.” – Brenda

“Knock, Knock”

“Why do people have to die?” – Tracy Montrose
“To make life important.” – Nate

“Out, Out Brief Candle”

“Everything’s bad for something.” – Nate

“That’s the thing about depression: if you really allow yourself to feel it, it gets very boring very fast.” – Brenda

“The Invisible Woman”

“You know, it’s just so sad that you can love somebody so much and have absolutely no idea what’s going on in their head.” – Brenda

“I’m Sorry, I’m Lost”

“You’re looking for me?” – Nathaniel Sr.
“Yeah. Where the fuck is your grave?” – Claire

“All Alone”

“You could’ve dressed.” – David
“I couldn’t.” – Claire
“The rest of us managed.” – David
“Well, then, the rest of you win. ” – Claire

“Everyone’s Waiting”

“We’ve been clutching so desperately to the past, and for what?” – David
“Because that’s when there was hope.” – Ruth

One of my favorites is from the episode in Season 1 where Claire and Ruth are visiting a friend, or maybe a relative, in San Bernardino (it’s a mom and her daughter). Ruth wakes Claire up before dawn to leave, and Claire goes, “Jesus Mom, I’m beginning to feel like Anne Frank!” and Ruth replies, “If we don’t leave now, we’ll have to go SPINNING!!”
