Weeds – Doug takes one for the team

Has Doug been looking to sleep with Jolene (Karen Strassman) all along, or was he just doing his duty by distracting her during Nancy’s presentation to his firm’s investment committee? With all that was going on during last night’s episode of Weeds, that’s the one thing that really stuck with me. I like to think that he’s the ultimate team player … but who knows.

Silas’ challenge to Nancy is, for the most part, little more than a series of embarrassing moments for him. The phone call fiascos — he and Doug have lived together and even been in business together yet Doug barely even gave Silas a moment of his time — pathetically going back to Emma for another chance, even losing Alex (Blaise Embry) — also known as imitation Silas — to Nancy’s operation … Silas isn’t ready for the major leagues.

Despite that I loved when Andy and Silas went to see Demetri; Andy was hilarious in how awkward he was. I can’t believe he ended up reaching out and touching Demetri’s bicep! That was awesome.

It makes sense for Andy to get back in the drug game. I did want to see him succeed on his own, but he belongs with family. So what was with his reaction to the recorded message about Charles’ (David Clennon) funeral? The show took a little time to explore that relationship, but we never really witnessed how it affected Andy. What does Charles’ death say to him? Why does it define the Botwin drug wars as a waste of Andy’s time? I assume we’ll learn more next week, but I wish we had more foundation upon which to build.

As indifferent as I am to him these days, I enjoyed Shane threatening Mitch’s (Michael Harney) son Billy (Ian Hyland) after Billy’s initial halfhearted reunion with Mitch. Having seen Shane kill in the interim, it felt very different than the time when he tried to be the tough guy with the teacher who’d stolen his weed. But Emma bringing Mitch back into the Nancy picture is kind of recycled, because we’ve seen Nancy in trouble with all sorts of law enforcement before. What possible other outcome could there be to that story than “Nancy wiggles out of trouble again?”

How hilarious was it that Shane randomly asked Nancy if she thought she could get Stevie back? All of a sudden Stevie’s a consideration again (I just asked about him last week)? And then the call from Judge Franklin (Andy Umberger)! Not only has Nancy not thought about Stevie in a month, but she hasn’t done anything to prove that she can provide a stable home for a four year-old. The letter from the SEC was a nice touch, but that’s some seriously lazy continuity on the part of the show.

Great seeing Heylia (Tonye Patano) and Dean (Andy Milder) back in advance of the season finale. I love how randomly odd the Lion King thing was, and it frames their relationship in such a perfect way … if Weeds were to begat two new shows (the Silas/Doug/Andy spin off is definitely tops on my list), Heylia and Dean would be a perfect choice. I can just see it now….
