American Horror Story – Too much, just right, or not enough?

Some critics who previewed 'AHS' thought the show went over the top. Some others say it's not enough. I say it's just right. What's your call?

- Season 1, Episode 1 - "Pilot"

I wrote a preview post about American Horror Story‘s premiere episode some time ago, so I won’t be going to much into it here. Since then I’ve seen the second episode of the series, and will only tell you that things continue along the same freaky-bizarre pace started in the pilot. For me, that’s a good thing, though others seem to think the show goes over the top with its oddities. I say we need more out-of-the-norm shows on TV these days, because I’m sorta getting sick of seeing rehash after rehash — and remake after remake! Bring on the weird and freaky!

One moment I wanted to bring up, though, was arguably one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen on TV in quite some time. That would be the S&M suit scene, where Vivien (Connie Britton) thinks she’s having sex with her husband, Ben (Dylan McDermott), when in fact the person in the creepy, leather S&M suit is … well, we have no idea! Holy crap yuck! And … AND … she’s pregnant with whoever-that-is’s baby. Sick!

One thing I wonder: What makes an “American” horror story different than a European one?

So, what did you think? Too much for you to handle, or did it just outright suck? Or, did you love it?

In the meantime, here’s a video of the creeptastic opening credits sequence that’s enough to give you nightmares right there:

I loved it! It was entertaining and it creeped me out a bit….something the newer horror movies haven’t done in a long time. I think it’s going to be a fun show.

Also, a European horror show would have different accents. Come on, Keith. You really had to ask???

Holy Moly. I wanted to (and expected to) like this show, but what a mess. Yes, they were trying to do too much — WAY too much. The storytelling was downright incoherent in spots because they were shoving in so many bizarre mysteries and freaky quick-cuts. We get it, but come one, sometimes quiet subtleness can be scarier or creepier than anything else you can put on film.

I really want a show like this to work on TV, so I’ll give it another couple episodes, but this pilot was downright bad. Bad writing, bad character development, bad acting. Just bad.

I loved it! So refreshing from the other TV shows I watch.

I finally watched the first episode and can’t wait to get caught up! Did anyone else notice they used a major musical cue from Vertigo during the scene with the burned guy telling his story? I wonder what that was about?
