Covert Affairs was explosive in its return both figuratively (Annie and Jai’s lives) and literally in “The Wake-Up Bomb.” Both Annie and Jai’s personal and professional lives have been jumbled up. While Jai definitely came out ahead, Annie still has some progress to make.
I was impressed with show’s return. The summer part of the season was a bit hit-or-miss for me. It definitely had some great episodes, but there were some slow ones as well. This was clearly in the win column for me. From the opening sequence filmed in Venice to the end scene with Annie alone in her new safe house, it was a fun ride.
If I was disappointed in anything, it is that I think we have seen the last of the sexy chef, Zavier. While getting drunk and crashing at his house was another of Annie’s mistakes, in streak of mistakes, they were so cute together. He was much more fun and suited to Annie than the doctor (see below regarding his status in Annie’s life).
It was sad to see Annie alone in Venice and then return to Washington and not much had changed. The chance encounter with Zavier at his restaurant was just what she needed to get out of her funk, until it turned out he was a potential terrorist. What are the odds, really? Annie is a professional and despite her belief in Zavier, she did her job.
Unfortunately, Annie can’t date him because he is a foreigner, so I doubt we will see him again, but I hope we do. In many ways, Zavier reminded me of the fun, sponteanous, creative Ben that Annie loved, but also a solid and trustworthy guy much unlike Ben.
Poor Annie. Her job hasn’t gone well, her sister kicked her out, she was excluded from family movie night and she had to spy on the nice, sexy chef. In the end, I think this move is necessary for her become truly independent. She’s no longer a newbie spy and she should grow in her personal life as well.
She began to mend the relationship with her sister by straight out apologizing to Danielle. I’d like them to get close again, but I’m not sure that Annie should move back in. She does put them at risk by living there, but more importantly as I said above, she needs to become independent.
As Annie is finding her independence, so is Jai. Hmm … what a way to screw over your friend (I think he will make it up to him.) and use your corrupt, but powerful father to get ahead. I have to give Jai credit for finally stepping up and getting what he wanted. It may not have been a pretty way to do it, but that is the way political organization’s work, right?
During much of the season, Jai has been in the background, so I’m looking forward to seeing him play a more prominent role in the show. Now that he no longer works for Arthur and is an equal to Joan, things should get pretty exciting.
I was quite impressed with the fall premiere and am looking forward to watching this all play out. The show’s producers have said that the season will end with a “seismic” shift that will alter the show going into season 3. Can’t wait to find out!
