Psych – Tap dancing seabird?

'Psych' heads to the minor leagues this week. Will Shawn get to play baseball?

- Season 6, Episode 5 - "Dead Man's Curveball"

After the last few hilarious themed episodes, this week’s Psych “Dead Man’s Curveball,” was a bit of a letdown. The case of the week wasn’t much more than a normal procedural. Perhaps, they really wanted to stick with the baseball theme — slow and methodological. Even though it wasn’t as good as the other episodes this season, there were some great moments and chuckles.

A coach on the local Triple A team, the Seabirds, dies with amphetemines in his system and Shawn and Gus are brought in to investigate if he was murdered. Since this was a Psych investigation rather than a police case, the episode was missing the laughs that come with Shawn and Gus interacting with the police department.

While the police department regulars were largely missing, there were amazing guest stars in Danny Glover, Michael Trucco (a favorite of mine!), and baseball legend, Wade Boggs.

Here are some of the highlights of the episode:

  • “Gus, don’t be Pete Rose’s haircut.” — Shawn
  • “Yeah, nor can I. After the Rangers cut me, it was either sign up here or get some lousy job like selling pharmaceuticals.” — Cal
    “That’s a noble profession.” — Gus
  • “Stealing the pants off a drunk guy for a urine sample — really, Shawn?” –Henry
“Hey, hey, hey, for the record, he removed them himself, okay? I just hooked him with a stick and then ran off as he tried to set Gus on fire. That guy parties hard.” — Shawn
  • “You know what really sucks? Being a classically trained tap dancer that’s being forced to dance the macarena in front of a bunch of liquored-up townies while wearing a flea-infested seabird suit.” — Gus
  • Watching Gus tap dance in the seabird outfit, getting boo’d and then getting down with “the worm” because of fleas. Hilarious!
  • Shawn using his power of observation to cheat (it is cheating right?) by stealing signs. Also, how that scene helped Shawn solve the case, since Izzy couldn’t hit a curve ball.
  • “… a bench-clearing brawl consisting of one team.” – Baseball announcer
  • Sammy the Seabird (Gus) getting into the fight and his flying kick takedown of a player.
  • Shawn stealing Wade Boggs belt … how did he pull that off?
  • No one wanting to volunteer to be hit in the head with a baseball bat by Woody. Duh. Nice use of a watermelon.
  • “Jamie Farr never killed anyone, Shawn.” – Cal
  • Shawn did a perfect imitation of Gus as Sammy, the Seabird.
  • “You’re right, Gus. This suit does have fleas. Very unpleasant.” — Shawn
  • “I can’t shoot Wade Boggs.” – Seabird’s GM
  • The end with Shawn at bat, as they say … priceless!

One Response to “Psych – Tap dancing seabird?”

I was kinda disappointed that in a baseball episode they didn’t make a Roger Dorn joke at Corbin Bernsen’s expense (his character in the Major League movies).
