30 Rock – Liz has a secret

'30 Rock' is back after an extended hiatus and things are looking a little strange: Liz is happy, Jack is emotional, and Jenna is enjoying a television success. Things may be askew, but the comedy level is not one of them.

- Season 6, Episode 1 - "Dance Like Nobody's Watching"

30 Rock is back! I have to admit that the return of one of my favorite shows is a little bittersweet this year because it means one of my other favorite shows — Community — is being put on hiatus. Ah well, we might as well focus on the positive. After all, the crazy world of Liz Lemon, TGS, and “NBC” is back on the air. Things certainly felt a little different in this first outing of the sixth season. Jenna had the funniest storyline of the night (which is rare), Jack was letting his emotions get the better of him, and Liz has a secret boyfriend!

Before the big reveal at the end of the episode, Liz was acting strange herself. She was happy, easy going, and dare I say carefree? This bizarre un-Lemonlike behavior led Tracy to the obvious conclusion that she was a crackwhore. Jack, however, knew better, discovering Liz’s hilarious decoy secret: her membership in the Timeless Torches, the WNBA’s most awesome dance crew (and, yes, those were actual members of the Timeless Torches on the show). As well as Jack knows Liz, though, even he was surprised to see her secret boyfriend when he dropped her off at a movie theater. I’m excited to learn more about this mystery man, and if he is someone that we have met before.

Meanwhile, Kenneth was convinced that the end of the world was nigh. It was a typical Kenneth storyline and resulted with a bunch of great quotes and a fantastic costume trifecta: Lutz as the devil, Frank as Santa (with a machine gun), and Toofer as Jesus.

My favorite plot of the night, however, belonged to Jenna. As the “mean judge” on America’s Kids Got SingingĀ (the best reality competition this side of MILF Island), she was at her completely insane best. She had a bunch of great lines as she destroyed the spirit of cute little children. It really is the perfect job for Jenna. I hope we get to see more of the show. It was also great to see John McEnroe and D’Fwan back on the show. It looks likes season six may be a very good year.

Quotes:

“Organize table by food jewishness” – Kenneth’s chore list

“Well, enjoy it while you can because tomorrow you’re going to women’s hell. Ah, also, FYI, women’s hell is also the same as aroused dog heaven.” – Kenneth

“Did you see what happened here? We turned an argument into an opportunity to become better friends.” – John McEnroe

“Liz Lemon is a crackwhore!” – Tracy

The show was actually “America’s Kidz Got Singing!” which is much funnier with the z and the exclamation point. And the TV satire continues to be the best part of this show. This episode felt overstuffed to me–they worked in a Jenna story, a Tracey story, Kenneth, the writing staff, a Liz/Jack story, and a TV satire. The only ones missing were Grizz, Dot-Com, and Cerie.
