Psych – You better make it do what it do

Don't call it a comeback! USA's quirky hit comedy returned with an episode that proved to be quite hilarious. Nothing new there. How do they do it? Perchance that's a mystey worth solving! Somebody get Shawn and Gus on the line!

- Season 6, Episode 10 - "Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger"

Psych

It’s common knowledge among my family members and friends that I like my television. It’s true. Generally, when I get off work, I find comfort in watching good programming, and the folks at the USA network certainly know how to deliver. Case in point — Psych. Ah, how happy I was to see my favorite crime-fighting misfits return for the second half of their sixth season. Did they disappoint? Of course they did! But I know that you know that I’m not telling the truth. See what I did there?

Funny, right? Almost as funny as the episode itself.

It was an eventful night for Shawn and Gus … as usual. This particular episode seemed to be a bit funnier than the previous installment. After hilariously being assigned to guard a wall at a museum loading dock, the boys succeed in letting thieves escape with some prized artifacts. Naturally, they’re on the case! Oh, brother. However, they soon find that they need help when it comes to properly tracking the stolen museum merchandise. To that end, Shawn recruits Robin Hood … I mean, er, Cary Elwes as Despereaux … much to the chagrin of Gus. I’d now like to say that it was great seeing Cary again. The man is all kinds of funny. Yet I digress. After sneaking into the hideout of the bad guys, they learn that the villains are after some freaky deaky dagger. But why? Does it even matter?

After that, a bunch of hilarity ensues, Despereaux fakes his own death, the villain gets whacked on the head with a shovel, and Shawn and Gus save the day … as if there were any doubt that they wouldn’t. I have a question — does anyone watch this show for the plot? I’m dying to know. With as many jokes and shenanigans packed into an episode, the plot tends to be something of a punchline itself. That’s what makes Psych so fun!

One of the things that I like about Psych is the rapid fire dialogue, and there was certainly a lot of that in this particular installment. The boat chase scene was pretty interesting especially when it was revealed that Shawn and Gus hopped on the wrong one. I loved the shot of Despereaux speeding past them with a perplexed look etched upon his face. Also, how funny was that fight scene between our dynamic duo? That is the stuff that television shows should be made of. James Roday and Dule Hill have chemistry — no doubt about it. Consider them the Burt and Ernie of the CSI world.

Having said that, maybe they’d be more of a dysfunctional Mario and Luigi, although fellow clacker Deb likens the duo to a comedic version of Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Anyway, before I sign off on this review, I want to leave you with a few funny quotes from last night’s episode:

“You can no more do that than Gus has control of his bladder during intercourse.” – Shawn

“I have three playa phones — one for each part-time shorty!” – Gus

“Gus is crappy.” – Shawn
“Your mama’s crappy.” – Gus

“Contrary to popular belief, there is such a thing as dumb questions.” – Tour Guide

And that’s about it. Can you think of anymore? What did you think about Psych’s return? Are you glad the show is back? And did anyone spot the pineapple? I sure as hell didn’t. Feel free to sound off in the comments below!

What? No mention of the all the Indiana Jones shout outs…including John Rhys-Davies in the picture above?
Did you miss all that??

My apologies, Cuuuk. I had to finish this review up faster than usual due to having to get my wisdom tooth extracted and five fillings, and I didn’t have the energy to regurgitate everything that I enjoyed about the episode. But that’s the beauty of having fans like you to remind me! How kind of you! I’ll do better next time! :-)
