An age-old aphorism states that sometimes it can be better to get things late rather than never. Let’s try to apply that same gem of wisdom to this recap, shall we? Sorry, guys. It’s been a rather taxing week. However, I’m sure you’re a heck of a lot more concerned about the hilarious lives of Shawn and Gus as opposed to the sad, dreary week that I had concerning baby mama drama and problems at my day job.
Sympathy, anyone? No?
Fine. Let’s dig in then. This episode of Psych was every bit as interesting as the last one. However, what I enjoyed about it was that we got a chance to focus on Gus for a change. While, Shawn and Gus are undeniably a solid team, I think it’s blatantly obvious that James Roday is the lead in this program … not that there’s anything wrong with that. Roday is quite a fantastic comedic actor. I loved him in The Dukes of Hazzard! Nevertheless, with Gus being my favorite character, I was very pleased to see Dule Hill get some serious screen time along with an amusing story.
Blackapella — or is that Quarter Black? — was on hand to perform at an elegant charity benefit founded by Deacon Jones, a character played by Cheech Marin. How funny is that, right? The charity is designed to reduce gang violence and pull kids off the streets. So far, it’s been working which is cause for a celebration hence the reason Blackapella — or is that Quarter Black? — is there to help get the party started. However, after Shawn collapses due to a burst appendix, Gus learns in the hospital that Deacon was shot and injured — and is persuaded to investigate the case by his band members Tony and Drake — Jaleel White and Mekhi Phifer respectively. Let’s pause for a second so I can praise the performances of White and Phifer who were especially funny. I loved the quick-fire banter between the two of them, and I liked their chemistry with Hill, especially the scene with them all hiking through the woods. They were really believable as old friends. My only complaint was that Kenan Thompson seemed to be missing in action.
Anyway, after Shawn hilariously demands to accompany the trio on the investigation by way of an iPad with two-way video capabilities, Gus learns that Deacon was stealing from his own charity and was paying off a shady fellow. There’s a pretty funny run-in with Deacon’s ass-kicking assistant Tina and a few other hijinks, but Gus doesn’t really learn too much. It’s Shawn that deduces the scheme, which I suppose is fitting considering he’s the ‘psychic’ and all.
So, it’s revealed that it was a security guard the whole time! It turns out that Deacon’s charity wasn’t good for the security officers since store-owners were starting to feel safe. As a result they were canceling their security contracts. However, with Deacon now a victim himself, people in the community would become fearful again and the security business would begin to thrive once more. Hmm. I suppose that makes sense.
So, another case solved! You guys, I’m going to sound like a hater for this (and I assure you that I haven’t been sipping on any Haterade), but I would have liked for Gus to have solved the case on his own. Seeing him together with his group members trying their best to get to the bottom of Deacon’s shooting was great. Why did Shawn have to be the hero in this one?

And that’s about it! Did anyone spot the pineapple? Sadly, I’m really not so good at finding it. I guess I prefer vegetables. Here’s a few questions to ponder — Would anyone like to see Gus get a permanent love interest? Will Chief Vick get more screentime? I’d like to see her do a bit more. And would you like to see more of Blackapella — or is that Quarter Black? Feel free to sound off below!
