The Walking Dead’s Lori Grimes – Character Clack

This week's Character Clack takes a look at Lori Grimes from 'The Walking Dead.' Is she the worst mother ever or doing the best that she can? We chime in on that debate.

Lori Grimes was the most maligned character during the second season of The Walking Dead. Was that characterization deserved? Clackers Keith, Bob, Michael and Carla discuss the good and bad about Lori last season and what we’d like to see for her next season.

Describe Lori Grimes in 3 words

Keith: Hypocrite. Liability. Sammich-needing.

Bob: Misunderstood. Impetuous. Conflicted.

Michael: Flighty … insecure … indeterminate

Carla: Self-absorbed. Manipulative. Mother.

What is the most outlandish thing Lori has done so far (you know she will do something worse next season)?

Keith: Her crazy see-sawing of screwing around with Shane while Rick was in the hospital, then all but suggest to Rick that Shane be killed or thrown out of the group, then turn around and appear disgusted at Rick that Shane was killed.

Bob: I think taking off to find Rick and getting into a car accident. It was so irresponsible for so many reasons.

Michael: Heading off to find Rick, Glenn and Hershel.

Carla: I have to agree with Bob and Michael. Why oh why did she take off in the car? It made no sense. Though, her actions surrounding the pregnancy were kinda out there too. Poor Glenn.

Is Lori a bad mother? Or, doing the best she can given the circumstances?

Keith: I’d say the best she can given the circumstances. She seems to hold Carl as her most important job.

Bob: She’s not a great mother. Most often it seems that she is worrying about herself or Rick over Carl (can someone please keep an eye on that kid?) or her unborn baby. With that being said, it is a different world.

Michael: She’s a bit of the former, mostly the latter. She’s bad in that she’s providing little stability and making poor decisions. She is a victim of circumstance, however, and that’s a great part of what’s causing her consternation. Still … she’s had enough time to adapt. She’s using the situation as a crutch currently while throwing a holier-than-thou attitude at many people.

Carla: At the beginning of the season when Carl was dying, she showed that she is a loving mother. She even considered ending her pregnancy for the good of her unborn child. On a day-to-day basis, she is easily distracted by other people and situations. But,when she is thinking about, talking to, and making decisions regarding Carl, she shows she is a good mother.

What did you make of Lori’s reaction to Rick at the end of the finale?

Keith: See above.

Bob: She was projecting her own guilt and self loathing onto Rick, which just made her look like more of a fool.

Michael: See above … and … the fact she uses her circumstances to here best interests. Possibly unwittingly and without forethought, but she does so nevertheless.

Carla: Her reaction, while honest, was despictable. She needs to apologize and make amends to Rick.

What do you want to see for Lori in season three?

Keith: To become a voice at the end of an nonworking telephone.

Bob: A little redemption. The fan base seems to despise her right now and she’s not really that bad.

Michael: I want to see her undergo a completely mental breakdown which will, in turn, cause her to cross that line of impetuousness she’s built and force her to grow the hell up and stop pointing fingers at others, taking responsibility for herself.

Carla: Not sure about the first part, Michael, but all with you on the second part. I want to see her think more about the group and her family in respect to the group and less about herself.

she needs to die…BUT. AMC will see to it that she cont to be that selfish, bad mother, that is better than anyone else… I guess they think, we need her. She is suppose to die soon per the comic, maybe end of this coming season 3 or the 4th. For me, that is too much Lori!!!! .

Unless she is going to become an antagonist, there is no way she is going to die the way she currently characterized. If she died in the first episode back I would shamelessly stand up and clap. I really don’t think the show wants us to have that reaction of she dies. They will and try and make her more likable first.

Then again this is a show that treated Otis’s wife and whoever the heck that guy was in the RV as major character deaths. So who knows with these people.
