A show I’ve never seen, Mad Men, has got me joyously butt dancing this week

AMC's 'Mad Men' spawns an ear worm of foot-tappin', air guitar-playin', gluteus maximus-movin' awesomeness. I dare you to test your immunity against it.

Many things amuse me. Many, many things.

The list is varied and long. It has the tendency to change often. Things forgotten become new again. Things which may be old but which I may never have never seen become soup du jour. A fleeting thought or suggestion or quote can turn obsessive. An ear worm can sometimes blanket everything I do.

Off the top of my head, here are just a few of the things I find amusing:

  • Every time someone says “You know what?” the response is always “Chicken butt.” This is immensely amusing to me.
  • Monkeys amuse me to no end. Especially monkeys in commercials. There was a stint of time where I bombarded each and every one of my fellow writers with the “You know what would be even more awesome? Million Dollar Monkey Drop …”
  • Speaking of my fellow CliqueClack writers, they are a constant, unending supply of amusement, each and every one of them. (And Kim? It’s just a matter of time …)
  • The drama and rimshot links I use to excess never, ever, ever get old. (Oh … they get old to some people, but not to me.)
  • Breaking out in “Pico And Sepulveda” amuses me. Daily. Often during multiple times of my day.
  • Folks’ pitbullish, vice-like grip regarding the idea of straps on comic book characters amuse me.
  • Standing up abruptly and checking to see if I’m sitting on anything when someone calls out “You’re on a roll” is nothing less than awesome. (Especially if done in unison with a table-full of others in the know.)
  • Bob’s Burgers? Bobcat Goldthwait? Bob “Bobba Looga” Degon? My dog, Bob The Dog? All amusing.

But my latest obsession of amusement came out of left field, courtesy of Mad Men … specifically out of Bob’s lastest review. Now … understand: I’ve never (yes, I used “never”) seen a solid, uninterrupted 45 seconds of Mad Men before. I don’t know what all the hoopla is about. (One day it’s possible I’ll get on board, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.) With all the smoking that supposedly takes place on it, I’m a’feared I might contract emphysema. Granted, the show boasts the easy-on-the-eyes Christina Hendricks, but I’m not so easily swayed by a swish of red hair. (Yes … that was a bit difficult to write. Get off me.) But … let me address the obsession at hand:

The “Fat Betty” references.

These references have been running rampant of late. Upon hearing them, I immediately correlated them to Ram Jam’s song “Black Betty.” Suddenly, I found myself joyously singing out loud the lyrics to the song with “Fat Betty” in place of the original “Black Betty.” And I mean, singing lots. Lots and lots. Enthusiastically.

It wasn’t a surprise to find I wasn’t the only “voice of reason” out there in the world who had caught on to the correlation. Memes have popped up, images galore, faux Twitter accounts, more. All in good fun.

And … it is in good fun, folks. Don’t let the naysayers and politically correct out there dissuade you from the frolickry involved. If you have any doubt whatsoever, I direct your attention to Ram Jam’s video below. Just try to stop yourself from replacing the “Black Betty” lyric with … well … you know. It’s just one of those tunes that gets your butt moving rhythmically when you’re driving down the road. It’s that addicting.

(And don’t you dare try to convince me you don’t butt dance in your car, either. I know you do.)

Many things amuse me. Many, many things.

This week? It’s Mad Men’s “Fat Betty” …

Whoa Fat Betty (bam-a-lam)
Whoa Fat Betty (bam-a-lam)
Fat Betty had a child (bam-a-lam)
The damn thing gone wild (bam-a-lam)
She said “It weren’t none of mine” (bam-a-lam)
The damn thing gone blind (bam-a-lam)
I said “Whoa, Fat Betty!” (bam-a-lam)
Whoa Fat Betty (bam-a-lam)

Well sorry Michael but this is one of my favorite shows. It is very interesting to watch and the writing is great. The actors are amazing. Yes they smoke a lot check the era everyone smoked a lot. I mean they are having drinks in the office for goodness sake. They just hired their first black secretary. It is a little bit of history every time you watch it. It is looking at us evolve and questioning yourself if the evolution has really made us all that better. Sorry you did not like the show maybe it helps to have watched from the first season. But it is a great show. Maybe you should give it another try.

I have to agree with the first one. Just reading “chicken butt” made me laugh.
