Revenge – Beatings all around

'Revenge' returns with Daniel in jail and the hunt for the real killer. Will Emily be able to save Daniel?

- Season 1, Episode 17 - "Doubt"

It’s been way too long since Revenge has been on television. I almost forgot it even existed … almost. Though, “Doubt” did little to renew my enthusiasm for the show. It wasn’t bad, but it felt like more of a filler episode than I expected for the show’s return.

What was Emily doing the whole time? A bit of damage control, but not much else. She recruited Mason Treadwell to cover Daniel’s trial and used that as an excuse to push blame for the fire from Amanda to Victoria. Will he now be a pawn in Emily’s game to bring down the Grayson’s?

Treadwell did a good job of destroying Victoria’s plan for getting Daniel out of trouble. By the way, his blog is a real website: The Treadwell Report. You can read the full story mentioned on the show.

Victoria searched for a scapegoat for Tyler’s murder. First, it was Amanda, then Jack, and finally Emily. Daniel’s honest integrity was exposed. He shot Tyler and he wasn’t going to go along with his mother’s plans to place the blame on an innocent. And, especially not on his love, Emily.

Victoria will do the unthinkable to protect Daniel. Were you surprised that she was behind his beating? Unfortunately, I knew that was coming from the Revenge panel at PaleyFest last month. But, it was still painful to watch. Did the ends justify the means? A concussion and broken ribs in exchange for house arrest? I could see Daniel forgiving her, if he were to find out. Maybe….

How is Emily going to save Daniel? Can she even do it? What about Jack? In the end, is she going to have to choose one over the other? I hope not. I like both Daniel and Jack. They are innocent and shouldn’t pay the price for something that she put into motion. Takeda is responsible, could she betray him? Doubtful.

Emily’s takedown of the guy outside the bar was impressive. She got a little justice for Jack’s beating and also Daniel’s. He may need to retire from being Victoria’s muscle now.

With the trial coming up, tensions are going to heighten. Conrad has begun to trust Emily, will Victoria make the same mistake? Will Daniel be acquitted without someone else taking the blame? Or, will the situation just get worse for someone else? It’s going to be a rollercoaster ride to the end of the season.

Odds and Ends

  • Emily knows that Takeda has Amanda. Is she a hostage or enjoying a nice beach somewhere?
  • Jack is trying to find Amanda, what will he do when he gets to the bank and she’s not there?
  • While James Purefoy is hot, what was the purpose of Victoria hooking up with him again after all these years? Will he play into the story somehow?
  • Poor Charlotte. Her grandfather didn’t want her going to a therapist, her mother slaps her, her boyfriend betrays her, her father isn’t her father … she is headed down a dark, dark path.

One Response to “Revenge – Beatings all around”

Yeah there was kind of a sag in the show’s momentum, and James Purefoy’s addition seemed a bit jarring. I still enjoyed it though, but then I was kind of grateful to have seen it at all. Moments before it started, an emergency (fortunately it turned out to be minor) had me sprinting from the house. And of course, I hadn’t set a DVR timer, so I thought for sure I was going to miss it and one of my coworkers at Dish would spoil it for me before I’d be able to catch up. After I got back though, I remembered the Hopper (my new whole-home DVR) has the PrimeTime Anytime feature. With it enabled, it automatically records everything on ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. So I got to see this episode and because of that I’m even happier to have this DVR than I was before, even if this episode was a bit disappointing.
