Which one of Wendy Raquel Robinson’s TV roles is funnier? – Clacking in Color

As blunt sports agent Tasha Mack on BET's hit sitcom 'The Game,' Wendy Raquel Robinson scores tons of laughs. In this week's 'Clacking in Color,' the groovy column celebrating minorities on television, clacker Jaylen Christie compares and contrasts Robinson's current role to another one she was famous for -- Principal Regina Grier on 'The Steve Harvey Show.'

Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that I like to laugh. It’s true. In fact, getting me to chuckle seems to be a contest among some of my friends. It’s all good though. I like a good guffaw. That’s why I’m such a huge fan of sitcoms — especially those featuring casts that boast ethnicity and diversity. That seems to be a rarity in this day and age, right? Nevertheless, there are a few sitcoms on the air that do succeed in drawing good attention. One of those wonderful programs is The Game, and on this show the scene stealer is, without a shadow of a doubt, Wendy Raquel Robinson.

As street smart sports agent Tasha Mack, Robinson, a six-time NAACP Image Award nominee, is given a chance to really show just how funny she is. It’s a role that some of The Game’s more avid viewers believe to have been created with her in mind. While I can’t say if that’s true or not, one thing is certain — the woman is hilarious. However, while I do like Robinson as Tasha, I think I may be in the minority when I say that I actually preferred her as Principal Regina Grier on The WB’s The Steve Harvey Show. Shout out to anyone who remembers that sitcom! That program got me though high school. I digress.

With Brittany Daniel absent from the current season of The Game, Robinson’s character has become my new favorite. However, when having to choose between Tasha Mack and Regina Grier, the comedic character she played from 1996 to 2002, I’d vote Regina hands down. She’s the character that’s more fun. You don’t have to take my word for it. Let’s analyze the two, shall we?

  1. Which one is funnier? Well, perhaps that depends on the brand of comedy you prefer. While Tasha is tough, loud and super confident, Regina was smart, opinionated,  and super competitive. It was that competitive nature that made her so much fun to watch. At school, Regina was cool, calm, and collected. She was the epitome of sophistication, but Heaven forbid someone challenge her to a game of Scrabble or a dance-off. Her antics would become over dramatic and hilariously childlike, and Robinson just nailed it. A comical scene with her and Cedric the Entertainer comes to mind. The two of them were in a dancing competition against Steve and Lovita, and Cedric’s back went out on him. It was up to Regina to win the competition by busting out a series of hilarious dance moves. It was funny as hell. In regards to Robinson’s portrayal of Tasha, there are laughs to be had for sure. Tasha’s one-liners are priceless, and the way she calls Melanie ‘Med School’ always cracks me up.
  2. Which one is smarter? Now here’s a hard one. It’s blatantly obvious that Tasha Mack is richer, but does being rich mean that one is smart? While Tasha did climb out of the hood to manage her son’s football career, a little bit of me believes that some of her success is based off of what her son Malik was able to accomplish himself. When it comes to Regina, well, it takes a masters degree to become a high school principal. Furthermore, the character has countless accolades, and I do believe she was an, um, what was it again? Oh, yes … an Essence Power Professional. The fact that Regina was intellectual was definitely a plus.
  3. Which one is stronger? Tasha Mack. Without a doubt. The woman keeps a gun in her trunk. She’s not someone to be tangled with … although tennis pro Serena Williams did give Tasha a run for her money back in season two. That was a funny episode.

Well, two out of three isn’t bad, is it? While this is just my reasoning for why I think Regina is the winner, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That’s the beauty of being diverse … and perhaps that’s the word that applies to Robinson. With a hand full of roles in both movies and television, she’s certainly proven that she has what it takes to make it in Hollywood. Her career is something that I’ve followed with great interest. With two memorable television characters to her credit, she’s certainly got my attention as well as the adoration of her fans. Perchance that’s all that really matters.

Touchdown! And it’s good!

I enjoyed Wendy on the Steve Harvey Show. She was hillarious. I have also enjoyed watching her on The Game, although I liked the earlier shows. She is a very good actress.

Thanks for another great article!!

Wendy is undoubtedly a talented woman! I agree with what you said about the earlier shows of The Game. They were definitely better. However, it does look like BET is trying to pull it together. We’ll see. Thanks so much for reading!

I definately agree with the article for the most part except the third point about who is stronger. The writer overlooked the fact that Regina was a martial arts expert who was able to kick the ass of a robber who held up a bachelor party at Steve & Cedric’s pad, knock out an obnoxious guy dressed as a chicken at a baseball game and knock Steve to the ground with one punch, so Regina is no one to be messed with in an actual fight.
Tasha, apart from having a gun, didn’t do anything impressive and is mostly talk and no action. For heaven’s sake she got knocked out by Kelly of all people.

You have a good point, Draco. I honestly forgot all about Regina knowing martial arts. That’s pretty funny. I liked Wendy’s energy on that show. As a matter of fact, I think that was her first real starring role…and what a role it was! In regards to Tasha Mack, yes, you are right. Tasha does talk a lot of trash. She seems to be all bark and no bite. Have we ever seen Tasha win in a real fight? LOL
