Suits premiere review – The truth is out … now what?

It's been a long wait for the return of 'Suits.' After months away from Pearson Hardman, the season two 'Suits' premiere delivered an amazing, non-stop twist-filled hour of brilliance.

- Season 2, Episode 1 - "She Knows"

“She Knows” or does she? The way Jessica played out the Mike reveal kept us guessing from start to finish. From telling Mike he wouldn’t want to lie at dinner, to confirming to Harvey that Mike’s Harvard credentials checked out, to … forcing Harvey to fire Mike. Wow. Every time, I bought what she said and thought Mike would be okay until she finally revealed she knew the truth.

Of course, Suits wouldn’t be Suits without Mike. His relationship with Harvey is the core of the show. Even if, this season’s going to be more of an ensemble, you knew that somehow Mike would be saved. But, how the heck was Harvey going to pull it off?

Harvey has always been a manipulator, but not necessarily in a negative sense. He moves the pieces around in order to achieve his goals. The extent of his abilities were tested to the highest magnitude trying to save both Mike and the firm from Daniel Hardman (David Costabile).

Harvey pulled out a massive threat to get Hardman to stay away from the firm. I’m not sure we’ve ever seen Harvey be that intense. The gun was to his head, or at least at to Mike’s, and he went all in to take Hardman out. Unfortunately, Harvey met his match and outmaneuvered Harvey.

The truth it will set you free. Well, at least, it set Hardman free and put him right back at Pearson Hardman. Harvey went from the most intense at Hardman’s house to full of fear in the firm’s library telling Mike, “Go home now. Don’t come back.” Whoa!

But, the manipulations weren’t done. How is it that Jessica and Harvey can be so close and trust each other when they continually threaten to force a response from the other? Harvey forced Jessica’s hand by threatening actions that would draw attention to Mike and Harvey. First with Louis and then by saying he would leave if Mike was fired which would give Hardman a target.

Will their new common enemy of Daniel Hardman be enough to pull them together? Will their quest to take him down allow Mike to fly under the radar at least a little longer? I hope so. With Jessica in the know now about Mike, it can hopefully become an non-issue for awhile.

This premiere was one of my favorite episodes of television. While the premise of Mike working at a law firm without credentials is a bit far-fetched, the reactions are authentic. I watch for the relationships, the quick banter, and, yes, the manipulations. How are they going to play each other? Unlike other shows, you never quite know what is going to happen next. I can’t wait to see the rest of the season.

Odds and Ends

  • Absolutely love the developing friendship between Donna and Rachel. That bathroom heart-to-heart was so real. They both need a friend.
  • The hallway walk showdown between Jessica and Harvey was fiery!
  • It was difficult to watch Mike act Harvey-like and take down the bookstore girl. I don’t want Mike to lose his morality and innocence. Yes, he is lying, but he still has an innocence about him. And, that’s what has drawn Rachel, and even Harvey to Mike.
  • If Jenny and Trevor never return and I’d be okay with that.
  • Can’t wait to see what Mike says to Rachel when he sees her next. That message?!? Aww!
