Nancy’s back, and Weeds is about to go on an adventure the likes of which we have seen many times before.
Or is it?
Could it be that Nancy Botwin has had a life-altering experience that’s about to leave her a changed woman? Is the one-time wife of a Mexican drug kingpin about to make the world a better place one ounce of weed at a time?
In order to get there, Nancy first had to deal with Buttons the Clown, the established supplier of pot pops to the sick. I was a bit surprised to see that the hospital — or whatever rundown place Nancy’s convalescing at — seemed fine with all the free-flowing drugs. I understand that circumstance dictates a lot, but what institution in its right mind wouldn’t fear, um, the law?
(FYI, for those of you who are interested, the New York State Assembly passed legislation allowing patients with “severe debilitating or life-threatening conditions” to buy medical marijuana from registered organizations. The State Senate failed to take up the bill before adjourning, meaning it isn’t NY State law … and regardless Nancy is far from a registered medical dispensary!)
Anyway, I loved how Nancy played a little Italian Mafia in her power-play; it was a ludicrous back story to have been written for her — Mexico! — but she used it to her advantage as few others can. Perfect play by Nancy. Not for a particularly good reason, but it is what it is.
And that really brings me to my main point: is Nancy prepared to go to all the expense — and risk — of running a pot business if she’s not going to reap any of the rewards? Yes she told Silas that they only won’t charge the sick, and most of their customers aren’t sick, but the business part of me has to side with Silas: at least make your cost back! Did you see those patients? They were rocked! Can you imagine how much product they each inhaled in one sitting? Silas has every reason to continue being “before” Silas, if even just to protect new Nancy from herself.
After all these years, Andy’s life is finally front and center. And man should it not be. Jill is a horrible human being who is going to chew him up and spit him out. The woman leached onto Stevie and, even after her sister asked for her own son back, refused to let him go. What kind of person does that? And don’t tell me that she was worried about Nancy as a mother, blah, blah, blah. Jill acts completely for her own interest; yanking back on Stevie was all about her.
But even if I’m not happy with the substance, I’m glad that Andy’s in focus for once, and in a story that’s independent from Nancy.
Another player who needs some closure before this show ends is Doug. Do you remember back when Doug was a local politician, a successful CPA, and a husband and father? How far he has come … and also how small his world has grown.
Even if he, Andy, and Silas get that spin-off I’m angling for, Doug Wilson needs some closure. Any kind will do.
So, pretty sure they’re not in New York, but Connecticut. And with some googling, medicinal marijuana is legal in Connecticut.
Also, I so don’t understand what was up with the whole Silas S&M scene.
It was my understanding also that they are in Connecticut, not New York? (At least as far as the ‘home base’ goes.)
I’m so ready for it to be over, to be honest.
