Necessary Roughness – Bedazzled helmet, anyone?

'Necessary Roughness' brings back Gaius Charles as Razor this week. Will he survive TK's hazing? Or, will Razor get the best of him?

- Season 2, Episode 6 - "What's Eating You?"

When I heard that Gaius Charles was returning to Necessary Roughness as Razor, I expected an episode full of on the field football antics. Instead, we got something so much better — cop strippers, a bedazzled helmet, a baby alligator, and Nico setting it all straight.

While I’ve enjoyed the more serious side of Necessary Roughness this season, “What’s Eating You?” was definitely on the lighter and funnier side. Besides the TK and Razor back-and-forth, their fellow player had a mysterious eating problem. MoonPies!

But, surprisingly, the stories that were the most compelling this week were in Dani’s personal life. Usually the home stuff is boring, teenage angst stuff, but this week it got deeper. We got a look at the stress that Dani is still dealing with from her divorce and trying to raise her kids right.

When Dani broke down talking to the therapist, I was happy for her. She desperately needed to let it all out. Yes, she has Matt. But, she has kept him mostly outside of her family issues. If they are going to have a long-standing relationship, she will need to continue to let him into that part of her life. The family dinner was a good start.

Unfortunately, Matt is moving faster than Dani will be able to handle. They are at such different places in their lives. They overcame the baby issue, but it will be much more difficult for them to bridge this gap. How Matt jumped from backing off living together to proposing marriage is well … crazy. Does he not really know Dani at all?

At least for now, Dani has Jeanette around to lean on. Their friendship has been missing in Dani’s life and on the show. With Jeanette pregnant and her own marriage proposal to deal with, it could give Dani the distraction she needs from her own life. Jeanette’s woes could also provide perspective on her own relationship, while being the bridge that Dani needs to fully accept Matt into her life and maybe … just maybe … move their relationship forward. Matt is a good and decent guy unlike her ex-husband. It would be a shame if Dani let him get away.

Hazing is frowned upon these days with the injuries and deaths that have happened, so it was a relief to see that the hazing portrayed here was on the harmless side. Given Razor’s fake identity, the “cops” showing up freaked him out. I didn’t see the stripper thing coming at first. Which prank did you find the funniest? I loved the bedazzled helmet. And, TK’s acceptance of it was priceless.

It was too bad that Nico ended up getting involved. His reaction was worse than anything Razor or TK did, but he did prevent the situation from getting out of control, so he did his job. I hope we haven’t seen the last of Razor. He provides a needed adversary and competitor for TK.
