Suits – Shit hits the fan big time

The 'Suits' season two premiere revealed Mike's secret and brought Hardman back to the firm, but neither were as earth shattering or heartbreaking as what happened due to Tanner's case against Harvey and the firm.

- Season 2, Episode 5 - "Break Point"

Yes, I went there in the review title. It just seemed fitting for Suits and in particular this episode. By the end, I was ruined just like Harvey, Donna, Mike and Rachel. Heartbreaking. Utterly heartbreaking to watch the situation unfold.

We knew that Donna had found the memo, but what would she do with it? She had every opportunity to tell Harvey, but she didn’t. She messed up. Should Donna have been fired for it? Absolutely. Though, that doesn’t make it any easier to accept. Withholding the memo from Harvey was minor when compared with shredding it. That is irreversible. Donna had to be out of her mind when she did that. Take it home, hide it, but don’t destroy it!

When Mike and Donna had it out in the file room by the shredder, I didn’t think another scene could top the tension and emotion, but that wasn’t even in the top three.

The new Suits bathroom set has been used for some pivotal scenes. This time it was the Harvey and Donna confrontation. They have had a trust between them that seemed unbreakable. And, to see something so strong be crushed in an instant was devastating. Will either of them be able to recover from the damage their words caused?

Jessica told Donna that Harvey wanted to be the one to talk to her, but could he have gone through with it? Perhaps. It didn’t matter, because Jessica needed to do. She is the head of the firm, so it fell to her to do the dirty work. Besides, the last time Jessica sent Harvey to fire someone, he didn’t do it. If Harvey wouldn’t fire Mike, would he have fired Donna?

Those two scenes were tremendously difficult to watch because they hurt characters that we have grown to love and appreciate. But, the absolute, most heartbreaking moment came at the very end. When Donna walked to the elevator with Harvey waiting for her and he pushed the button without a word — wow. Excruciating to watch. It was even worse with Mike and Rachel watching in shock at what they were seeing.

Donna is gone … for now. I have no doubt she will somehow find her way back into the firm and working with Harvey. Though, when she does their relationship will not be the same. Or, at least it shouldn’t be. The unconditional trust they had built over their years together has been destroyed. We will have to wait to see how badly and whether it can be repaired.

Suits managed to pull out a season finale worthy story and cliffhanger in its fifth episode. With eleven episodes left this season, we are in for some excitement, office politics, manipulations, and more heart string pulling. Perhaps, we will get some happy, loving moments as well.

Odds and Ends

  • “The dog on a leash?” — Harvey
  • “Either you tell him or I will.” — Mike
  • Donna using Star Trek references to distract from her deposition — Transporter beam. Aye, Cap’n.
  • “You don’t give a shit about me or Harvey. This is a witch hunt and I’m not going sit in this room for another minute.” — Donna
  • “Hey, you know what, maybe next time I’ll just hand my cat over to Michael Vick.” — Louis
  • Cat carrier = A Feline Transportation Unit. (Okay, Louis, if you say so.)
  • “Your little baby is growing up.” — Jessica (Surprised Jessica didn’t have a problem with Mike going into court alone, since he isn’t really a lawyer. No hesitation from her at all.)
  • “I’m not gonna fire you Donna, I might kill you, but I’m not gonna fire you.” — Harvey
  • “That’s the difference between you and me. You want to lose small and I want to win big.” — Harvey
  • “We win, Harvey wins, and I win.” — Jessica
  • We learned a bit about both Mike and Harvey’s fathers. Mike’s died when he was eleven. And, is/was Harvey’s a jazz musician? He said to Jessica while listening to jazz, “Not now. My dad.”
  • Jessica is playing office politics well. She isn’t going to give Daniel the chance to make a play at her job, is she? Good for her. Oh, and how did her and Daniel get rid of the other named partners?
  • Donna took the can opener. Is that what will get her back into the firm? Will Harvey need it?
  • Louis and/or Harold seem to normally be the more lighthearted stories in an episode, but not this week. Even they were involved in a sad situation. Rachel is genuinely caring. For her to take Mike’s ball from his first case to give to the grieving Louis was touching.
  • Harvey showed emotions we haven’t seen before. When he went to apologize, he seemed authentically sorry. And, then again at the elevator. He was sad and upset. Harvey was not exuding  the confident winner that he normally does.

Omg I saw this episode too. It was so heartbreaking when Jessica fired Donna. Harvey didn’t even say anything as he pushed the elevator down. But really, how could’ve she ‘lost’ an important document? Do you know what the can opener reference was meant to be for? I saw Donna an Harvey use it last season but I didn’t understAnd what they used it on:

agree with all u’re saying. already this in just ep 5! Don’t think we’ve seen the last of Donna, that shot with the can opener was an obvious ‘to be continued’ in my opinion. Thank goodness :)

Did you all miss Rachel giving Louis Mike’s tennis ball? Seems to me that would be good insurance if Louis ever found out the secret and wanted to fire Mike. Mike/Rachel could say Louis knew the secret from the start and demanded the tennis ball as a bribe to keep quiet. Louis wouldn’t have a case. (The tennis ball is supposed to increase dramatically in value.) So either Rachel knows the secret (from Donna) or Rachel knows Mike needs insurance for some reason unknown (also from Donna).

@ Coleman Adams I think she just did that because he was upset. Rachel really doesn’t seem to be that devious and there’s no way she knows about mike

Agree that Rachel isn’t that devious- she pays attention to detail. If Harvey wasn’t Harvey Louis would have had the emancipation case- and he’s a self proclaimed tennis enthusiast.

One the Donna/can opener I’m thinking her and Harvey have a very set pre-case/trial ritual- her taking it symbolizes the wedge her mistake makes for the relationship they share. Also thinking that Harvey will struggle to win without the ritual.

Wow. That was one hell of an episode … and while I liked Donna firing her was the legitimate response to the situation. I am glad to see the writers didn’t chose an “everything works out” resolution (at least not yet)

As for Mike. He did pass the New York Bar exam? Didn’t he? Doesn’t that make him eligible to try cases? I thought the “cover up” was that he didn’t go to Harvard and the firm only hires Harvard Law graduates … or am I mistaken?

am not sure i like what they did to danna today and i don’t mean firing ;because they really had no choice but to fire her,i mean keeping the memo was one thing destroying it left them no choice but to fire her. my problem with the story is, danna is a smart professional woman how could she have thought it a good i dear to destroy the memo?,except she was not thinking as the tough ,competent legal secretary that we know and love ,she was thinking as a weman in love, willing to protect the man she loves at all cost and am not sure i like that they made a charcter i love for her streght as a profesional woman a love sick puppy who would risk her carreer for a man.i hope they bring her back after they win their case but when they do i hope they find away to balance the fact that she is in love with harvey with the fact that she is a strong prefesional woman ,who is good ,very good at what she does and who care about her career too.

2 Gordon Warner:

The cover up is he doesn’t have a license to practice law. Technically, he has passed the bar- Several times over for others- but he doesn’t have a license. (the not attending Harvard wouldn’t be a big deal and isn’t a crime), but practicing law without a legal degree is.

I’m far from a prude, but I couldn’t believe three “shits” in the first 10 minutes, so I counted through the episode, like a drinking game. I got to 9. And there were around 5 “goddamns”. This seems like overkill to me. It’s one thing on “The Sopranos”. But I’m just not used to hearing “shit” that much on basic cable, outside of that one “South Park” episode. It just seems gratuitous here.
