This season of Suits has been one emotional roller coaster after another. I didn’t think another episode would come even close to being has heart-wrenching as “Break Point” when Donna was fired.
I was wrong. “Sucker Punch” was just as or even more painful. In many ways, it was the follow up to that previous episode. Harvey finally showed his vulnerable side and proved that he does truly care. Unexpected, but necessary.
The firm was put at risk and everyone, including Louis, pitched in to get a win. Unfortunately, Harvey was oblivious to what people were doing to get him out of the jam. The firm could have been saved with Tanner’s deal, but Harvey would have been gone. So, it was more about protecting Harvey than the firm.
Whether it was Mike recruiting Donna to testify, Rachel filling in, Louis playing Tanner, or Jessica risking her authority, they all were doing it for Harvey. When Donna walked into the test trial and Louis asked her if she loved Harvey, I thought that would be the climax of the story. Poor Donna. That was a horrible situation to be put in.
Of course, she loves Harvey. And, he loves her. But, that doesn’t mean it is a romantic love. Did she deserve it? No, but she was the one who made the mistake, so in a small way it was necessary to clear both her and Harvey. But, the real height of the story came when Harvey went to confront Louis in the bathroom.
Harvey went in there so sure he was going to rip Louis apart, as was I. But, Louis turned it around on Harvey and told him how it was. Brilliant. I adored Louis in that moment. He didn’t want to hurt Donna, but it was the only way. He had to sacrifice a little of Donna’s pride to win — not for himself, but for Harvey.
That message was only further compounded when Mike told Harvey that he needed to settle the case. The trial would destroy them all. Wow. How true! Even though Hardman was found the winning ticket in the case files, Harvey needed to suck it up for all of them.
When the vote came down to Harvey, he put his pride aside and voted to settle the case. Bravo, Harvey! Only it came at a cost that not even he forsaw in that moment. Hardman took advantage of the situation to call a Partner’s meeting to vote on Managing Partner. Oops.
What will happen now? Who will win the battle between Pearson and Hardman? And, will Jessica forgive Harvey for voting to settle instead of siding with her to go to trial? And, most importantly, how will Harvey get Donna to forgive him? She must come back! Harvey needs her.
Odds and Ends
I think it’s been pretty strongly insinuated that Donna does in fact have romantic feelings for Harvey. Why else would she be so upset by Louis’ questions if she didn’t? If she just loved him as a friend she could have laughed it off and just replied that she is his friend and nothing more. She was upset and humiliated because Louis was exposing her deepest feelings to a roomful of people, including all her former coworkers. I felt so bad for her. That was an intense scene, including the follow up with Louis and Harvey in the bathroom.
Hardman has been skeeming from the beginning. There was no “a ha” moment when Hardman found what Mike had been looking for about Tanner. And, he avoided what he had found when asked by Jessica and Harvey. Next weeks show (flashback 5 years) should show us some of the things that make the people we know today who they are. Oh and, best dressed cast on TV.
