Big Brother 15: Worst cast ever?

big-brother-600

It’s summer and that means it’s time to settle into the ‘Big Brother’ house with sixteen new hamsters. But is this cast even worth the time?

Big Brother started two weeks early this year as the fifteenth season premiered on CBS on June 26. The show normally debuts the week after July 4th, so the fans are getting some extra time to spend with their favorite hamsters this summer … but will this cast of characters even be worth the three days a week in primetime, 7 nights a week on Big Brother After Dark (now on TVGN, which unlike Showtime Too, has to mercilessly edit the audio feeds making entire conversations sometimes unintelligible), and 24/7 on the live feeds?

The casting process now is to find beautiful, vapid people who are less interested in the game than they are in being on TV and having a “showmance.”

I would have said yes, probably, after watching the first episode but by the fourth episode of the season, the first live eviction, my feelings on the show and this cast in particular have changed drastically. Perhaps it’s a sign of an aging show (similar to what Survivor has gone through), but it seems the casting process now is to find beautiful, vapid people who are less interested in the game than they are in being on TV and having a “showmance.” Yeah, it’s now become a hookup show. I started watching Big Brother with the third season, and they had some terrific people with a wide range of personalities and life experience: Marcellas Reynolds, Amy Crews, Chiara Jude, Danielle Reyes, Eric Ouellette, Jason Guy and Gerry Lancaster immediately come to mind as the standouts of that season, with age ranges from 23 to 51! This season’s cast members range in age from 22 to 37.

Anyone watching the live feeds knows that what CBS creates for network viewing is more fantasy than reality.

And now, some of the younger ones are showing their maturity level … at least to the people watching the live feeds. CBS and producer Allison Grodner go to great lengths to make sure what we see in primetime is a carefully crafted, non-offensive game show featuring the “real” personalities of the House Guests. But anyone watching the live feeds knows that what CBS creates for network viewing is more fantasy than reality. It was tough to stomach Thursday’s episode in which Aaryn was portrayed as the innocent, angelic blonde with a cute crush on surfer dude David after hearing the horrible things she’s been saying. In fact, at this point Aaryn, David, Kaitlin, GinaMarie, Jeremy, Amanda and Spencer have all shocked viewers with their racist, misogynistic, homophobic comments.

Aaryn’s been the worst of the bunch so far with such gems as “be careful what you say in the dark; you might not be able to see that bitch,” (about Candice, the single black female in the house), “No one’s gonna vote for whoever that queer puts up,” about gay HG Andy, and “Shut up. Go make some fucking rice,” to Asian HG Helen. Nice. But it doesn’t stop there. GinaMarie has chimed in that Helen “should be kissing our ass and serving us some fucking rice,” and “you know two blacks stick together. They’re like tokens” (referring to Candice and Howard, the one black male in the house). David, who was thankfully the first one evicted, said that the sheets smelled bad because of “black Candice.” Amanda called Andy “Faggoty Ann” and Spencer called him “Kermit the fag.” Spencer also praised Hitler’s speaking abilities and said the medical torture by the Nazi doctors was beneficial. Jeremy simply thinks of women as nothing but sex objects and has called some of them in the house “c–ts.”

Aaryn’s modeling agency has dropped her from their roster after her offensive comments.

As the fans, and now the media, have caught on to what’s being said by the House Guests, CBS’ response has been the same as it was in the past when other House Guests behaved badly, like “America’s Sweetheart” Jeff Schroeder, who went on an anti-gay rant during his season. CBS’ reaction to that was to cast him on Big Brother a second time, as well as The Amazing Race, and gave him a show online in which he interviewed the evicted House Guests. This season he was given the job of interviewing the HGs before they went into the house. I suppose by that measure Aaryn will be the head of programming at CBS by the time this season is over. She’s going to need the job, however, because karma has already bitten her in the ass, and she doesn’t even know it! Her employer Zephyr Talent, a modeling agency in Texas, has dropped her from their roster after her comments. GinaMarie is also oblivious to the fact that her employer, East Coast USA Pageants, Inc., has also fired her because in her position of being a role model to young girls, they actually found her comments to be not something they want her protegés to look up to.

CBS may find itself in a publicity nightmare with viewers fleeing the show in droves.

Knowing how these people talk amongst themselves really kills the fun of watching Big Brother. The producers have allegedly made an announcement to the House Guests to stop using racist language in the house, but will a verbal admonishment with no threat of consequences within the game really change the behavior of these people? Does CBS think that this unusual amount of publicity the show is now receiving will actually help the show, which has seen some of its lowest-ever ratings? There’s no such thing as bad publicity, right? I have a feeling that if the offensive comments continue — and things could get even worse after this week’s eviction and HoH competition, and the apparent cheating perpetrated by the winner — CBS is going to find itself in more of a publicity nightmare with viewers fleeing the show in droves. I don’t know that I want to spend three more months with these people, and I’m betting negativity surrounding this cast will take its toll on the show. The best suggestion I’ve seen so far: evict the entire cast and start over.

UPDATE: Spencer’s employer is also looking into taking action against him as well. Being a union worker, they may have less options than Aaryn’s or GinaMarie’s but the repercussions of racist rants continue to cause ripples.

UPDATE: In a surprise move, CBS did broadcast a collection of Aaryn’s comments accompanied by reactions from some of her housemates on the July 7th episode.

    • Makes the show kind of hard to watch, especially when we see someone like Aaryn getting the edit she’s getting. I heard a bit of the live feeds Friday and I was flabbergasted by her hypocrisy, talking about how awful the people are (that she doesn’t like) while playing the victim. It will be no surprise to the viewers who know about her comments to see who she selected (yes, she had the power this week) as the Have Nots for the week (or who she has put up for eviction). But while CBS and the producers refuse to seriously address the issue, another one of Aaryn’s employers on Friday also fired her. I hope someone gets a good picture of her face when she finds out what her actions have caused.

      • I watched this show from #1, never missed one, but this is the worst one. I use to like to
watch it when people used their OWN MINDS instead of someone TELLING them what
to do and who to put out. It’s no longer the Big Brother Game. And if Aaryn thinks she is
even close to being better than Janelle, that is funniest thing I’ve heard on this game yet.
And she fell for Helen’s comment about that. Aaryn honey you are not a very smart girl
or you would have played your OWN game and not what everyone told you to do. Your
racism has been just horrible. God Bless ya child !!!

  1. even with the edits, you can tell Aaryn is a huge bitch… easily

  2. Wow that’s all on bb after dark?

    • Most of that has been picked up on the 24/7 live feeds.

  3. That’s crazy. I wonder if CBS will edit to sway America’s vote for be MVP

  4. I watched every episode since season 1. Never missed them… This cast is questionable, boring, and i’ve not been in any hurry to watch this season… =(

  5. lol i bet the ratings went through the roof. We as a people thrive on chaos…we get to see war live on TV. Some things should be Taboo.

    • Actually, the ratings have been at an all-time low. Perhaps by now addressing the controversy on the last two episodes — and making Aaryn look like an even worse person by having not an ounce of remorse and turning herself into the victim — they are hoping to drive up the ratings. With this week’s turn of events as far as HoH, maybe the people who hate Aaryn and her group will turn in to gleefully watch their demise.

  6. I rewatched some episodes of older seasons (and not so old) while bored browsing youtube and it’s really startling to see how different every other season mood has been compared to this one. Sure there were nasty remarks and backstabbing and bitchiness in each of them but nothing compared to this year’s. It’s not just the racist remarks but also all the comments about women from Jer/Spencer and the obsession with having a relationship (at first I didn’t understand why someone that looks like A needed a show to find a boyfriend but now I realize it’s just probably nobody can stand her past the first couple of nights/dates).

I really hope next year they find a wider selection of contestants (GM/A/K are basically the same person occupying 3 spots in the house).

    • Yep, aside from the comments, and Aaryn’s oblivious reaction when Amanda brought the issue to her attention, I really don’t get the whole showmance thing to begin with. First of all, half of this group went into the house hoping to hook up, not play the game. Aaryn knew David for about two weeks when he got evicted! Two weeks! GinaMarie has been crying since Thursday over Nick! I know people can have intense like/love/hate relationships living in that confined space … but after three weeks?! They weren’t upset because a member of their alliance was gone, they were upset because someone they felt they were deeply in love with was taken from them! I don’t get it. After two months, maybe. The other thing is, couples are always a target so why would anyone want to flaunt a showmance? Eventually, it’s going to get you kicked out before the end.

The other thing that baffles me is walking in the house and picking out people you just met to form an alliance. In the early seasons, people sat back and observed the others before jumping into something major. Two people may have a bond and want to stick together, at first (that didn’t always work out), but no large group ever came together to form an alliance on the first day until recent memory. Look at last season’s Quack Pack. That didn’t come together until late in the game and they tore through the house. An early alliance like The Moving Company is doomed from the start (and it doesn’t help to have a secret alliance of five in a house of sixteen … unless you’re absolutely sure you have a partner of some sort outside of the main group that you can trust, which goes back to the showmances). Over time, both things can work in someone’s favor, but from day one or two? Well, I think we can see that The Moving Company has already filed for bankruptcy, and will be totally shut down by Thursday’s eviction.

      • The whole GM/Nick situation really reminds me of season 11 when Jessie was expelled and all those girls kept crying and crying and crying like it was the end of the world — I know it’s mean but it was the funniest thing ever, I was laughing so hard.

Like you said, only half the house seems to be there to play the game, only a handful of people ever say “in other seasons of BB this and that has happened so we need to watch out it doesn’t happen to me/us”.
I feel like Jeremy and Spencer specially are playing a really savage game and they forget (kinda like Rusell in Survivor or Dan last season to a lesser extent) that at the end it’s their BB peers who choose who the winner is. I feel MC, Amanda and Helen are the only ones really playing the long term game at the moment.

I honestly am not sure who I wish out of the house this week, on one hand I feel Jeremy is the biggest threat to the normal people group and A/GM/K are just foul-mouthed floaters without him, on the other hand, god don’t let A anywhere near the jury vote please…

  7. I have enjoyed watching BB since its inception. I was so disappointed with five people on the show this year, some more than others. It’s disappointing that people don’t have mutual respect for one another, there is no room for discrimination today. I do hope in the future of BB they do not pick people who can’t treat one another with dignity,

  8. The worst floppers, floaters and racists on any show ever. CBS dropped the ball big time.

  9. Helen is totally getting on my nerves. Every other word out of her repetitive mouth is, “You know” and “Like.” I can’t even count how many times she has used those words in such a short period of time with one person at a time. Don’t these people have any vocabulary? They sound retarded.

  10. These people have such poor habits. Helen likes to sit on tables in shorts and mostly everybody has their fingers in their mouths, eating their cuticles. It’s totally disgusting.

  11. First time I checked out this show and I can’t stand to watch these mindless pigs. What a no-class cast and meaningless show. Get a life!!!
