Diary of a Weeds Virgin – The Botwins are in an awkward situation

(Season 2, Episodes 10-12)

I’ve had some problems with several episodes this season, and quite frankly, midway through I was not looking forward to season 3. I just find Nancy so fundamentally unlikeable, that I was having a hard time with the entire premise of the show. However, Doug and Celia’s affair, and the introduction of Kat really kept it going for me. Plus, the season finale is phenomenal and has really gotten me jazzed for the next season.

2×10 “Mile Deep and A Foot Wide”

This episode was pretty awesome. Mainly because Celia and Doug are still cheating on their respective spouses together and watching police camera footage instead of porn. They’re kind of amazingly perfect for each other, and I hope it lasts for a while. I’m afraid Celia may be feeling a little guilty though, so I’m hoping she can push past it.

We also received a visit from Kat, played by the lovely Zooey Deschanel. Apparently she’s Andy’s crazy ex-girlfriend from Alaska. She’s ostensibly there to get Andy to sign a release for her memoirs, Permafuck: A Journal of Spirit Rape, but is actually there to “save” him from his domestic life. I don’t think Andy’s going anywhere, but I’d be okay with Kat sticking around for a little bit to try and convince him.

In Nancy-land, everything is falling apart. Heylia isn’t exactly overflowing with gratitude after Nancy warned her about the impending raid on her home. Instead, Heylia actually threatens her, telling Nancy that she knows where she grows, and she knows where she lives. I understand that Heyla needs to be a hardass, but would she actually try anything against Nancy or her family? She just doesn’t seem like the enforcer type.

Peter, for his part, is continuing to be super-creepy. Nancy tries to introduce him to her family, and it does not go well. He actually puts his hands on Silas, which blew my mind. Nancy, who has been making bad decision after bad decision, finally realizes that she needs to get the hell out of this ridiculous relationship. Unfortunately, Peter seems to have bugged her cell phone and hears her telling Conrad all of this. He’s obviously going to make a stand, but since this is season 2 of 5, I have a feeling he’s going to be largely unsuccessful. I have no idea what he’s going to try though, and I’m eager to find out.

2×11 “Yeah, Just Like Tomatoes”

Did Weeds go through a reboot after season 2? Because it seems like everything’s coming to an end. Zooey Deschanel is still hanging around and continuing to be awesome, but Doug and Celia broke my heart by ending their affair. Peter’s officially gone off the deep end and has threatened both Nancy and Conrad, seemingly ending their business.

Heylia’s getting in bed with the Armenians, but whether it’s to hurt or help Nancy and Conrad isn’t completely clear. Hopefully it’s to hurt Peter, finally bringing his crazy ass down. Either way, it doesn’t look like he’ll be around for much longer, which is good. I’ve mostly enjoyed the Peter storyline, but it’s definitely time for it to come to an end.

We find out that Silas has been stealing all of Celia’s Drug-Free Zone signs and surveillance cameras. Has he been doing it to protect his mother? It’s kind of a sweet gesture, but as Nancy finally admits, she’s the “Worst. Mom. Ever.,” so she probably doesn’t deserve it. It’s a nice thought though.

I’m kind of torn about the kiss between Nancy and Conrad. I love how there’s been this sexual tension between them since the beginning of the series, but I’m not sure I ever wanted them to act on it. Luckily, it didn’t go to far, so hopefully it can go back to just being an undercurrent of the show.

2×12 “Pittsburgh”

Daaaaamn. The entire Botwin family is fucked. This is probably my favorite episode of the series so far, and a hell of a season finale. I figured Peter would be going away, but I honestly thought he would be going away in the legal sense, not in the, uh, permanent sense. What’s really interesting about his death is that Nancy sent in the marriage certificate, so she should be legally entitled to whatever estate Peter may have. Though, hopefully she’ll give it to his son, since she did cause his father’s death and all.

I love the confluence of events that led to the final scene. Heylia and Conrad make a deal with the Armenians, but U-Turn decides to jack them, while Silas decides to steal the weed (how exactly did he get into the safe, or know where it was located?) and Celia turns him in for stealing the cameras and the sign. It’s a bad situation, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they get themselves out of it. My guess is that Sanjay saves the day. After all, why have him in the closet if he’s not going to figure out a way to be the hero?

I’m not really sure where they’re going to take this show next season. A federal agent and a father is dead, after all, as a direct result of Nancy’s “harmless” little business. Can this really be a light comedy about selling weed? When there are this many guns involved? Weeds seems to have painted itself into a corner a little bit, and I can’t wait to find out how it finds its way out.

The first half of season 3 is worse than the second half. But the later you go in season 3 the better it gets.

Season 3 is really a fun season after the ehh beginning, I think you will like it more than season 2.

Seconded! Season 3 is really fun.

I don’t think anybody ever said Weeds was a “light comedy.” It’s definitely dark comedy.

The later seasons aren’t even a comedy anymore.

I agree, except that the most recent season seems to have returned to its previous comedic form.

Really? There has only been one episode and it had funny moments, but sheesh, in real life her whole family would be dead by now.

However the Celia storyline was awesome! :)

I’m really excited to get started on season 3, but I’m also doing a Burn Notice Virgin Diary, so I have to return the disc I just finished today to Netflix before I can start watching Weeds again.
