Did Jane Espenson trigger an Alien Nation reboot, or … ?

Alien Nation

Early last month I had a little e-chat with writer/producer Jane Espenson about the Buffy Season Eight comic she’s been a part of (came out yesterday — go pick it up!). At the end of that interview, I asked Jane which sci-fi show she’d like to see get a Battlestar Galactica-like reboot next. Her answer: Alien Nation. As it turns out, word came yesterday that that’s exactly what Syfy plans to do.

Not only is Alien Nation getting the reboot treatment, but what’s really interesting (and damn cool) is who’s helming it: Angel, Dollhouse and Firefly producer Tim Minear. I wonder if Jane’s heard of him.

So, now I wonder which came first: Jane’s mention of what she’d like to get a TV remake, or Tim Minear’s pitch? Oh, I know what you’re all thinking — she was totally putting the bug in our ears after knowing the idea was coming ’round the corner from her pal Tim. But you’re wrong, I say. Wrong!

I say Mark Stern, VP of original programming at Syfy, reads my posts religiously. He saw my post with Jane Espenson last month and — BOOM — Alien Nation with Tim Minear was born. Hey, it’s the same way the new Alice movie went forward.

Come on, let me think it — it’s all I’ve got.

I wish I had that kinda pull. You must be special. An Alien Nation reboot sounds like something I would like.

I was excited about seeing a new incarnation of Alien Nation until I read the words “Battlestar Galactica-like reboot.” That I could live without. The tone of the original, like that of Battlestar, is something I wouldn’t like to see changed. If that’s the plan, I say keep the concept, change the name and characters.
