The top five(ish) new shows I’m looking forward to this season

I love lists. I love debating them, discussing them, deciphering them (because yeah, some of the ideas you see out there it takes the Rosetta Stone to comprehend). I think the internets exist solely to give me top ten lists to read. Oddly, however, I’ve yet to write a list-themed post myself, and I figured, with the fall season approaching, now was as good a time as any. Today I’ll look at the new shows coming this fall season that I can’t wait to see.

I’ve complained about the dearth of good new shows in this fall schedule already, but there are some things that I am really looking forward to this fall (and spring, and whenever “mid-season” means to the individual networks). Pretty much a genre list here, with a couple good looking sci-fi projects, the “MOST HYPED SHOW EVER,” hopefully something to take the place of my favorite medical drama, and a cable series I expect will live up to its predecessor.

5) My first cheat: I’m looking for either Trauma or Mercy to fill the incredibly huge shoes that ER has left (I need my medical drama fix!). I think Trauma has the better shot, but I re-watched the Mercy pilot, and it’s grown on me some since the first time around. One of these will have to do it, because I still have like three season to go before I catch up on House….

Gretsch and Mitchell on V4) ABC’s re-imagining of V has put together one of the best casts of any new show this year. From Joel Getsch to Morris Chestnut to Morena Baccarin to Elizabeth Mitchell (and that’s only like half of the main cast), they’ve put together a pretty amazing group. We know the concept can be successful; I just hope it finds its niche this season.

3) It seems everybody’s got Glee (but especially Julia) these days. I think FOX airing the pilot last season with American Idol was a brilliant move, and they’ve done a wonderful job building the momentum all summer. Lets just hope they can live up to the hype they’ve built.

2) I can’t say a whole lot about ABC’s FlashForward that hasn’t been said before — like here … or here — by me. I like good sci-fi (See how that’s spelled? It’s not SyFy), and this looks like it’s shaping up to be something good. ABC is certainly putting the marketing might behind it, so hopefully everything will pay off with a great first season.

1) It’s no secret that I think The West Wing was the best television show of all time. Ask me what the best eleven hours of television of all time was, and you’ll get a different answer. The companion piece to those eleven hours (Band of Brothers, if you’re wondering) airs on HBO this spring, and The Pacific is easily number one on this list. If it’s half as good as Brothers was, it’ll be the best thing on TV this year.

(Honorable Mention: Day One)

Did you know that Jason Dohring was casted for a lead part on the Pacific but finally it’s James Badge Dale who has won the role.
Dale is really talented, he will be the lead in the new AMC show “Rubicon”.
But Dohring on the Pacific would have been a must see TV in my book. Yes i am little disapointed i have to admit.

“It’s no secret that I think The West Wing was the best television show of all time.”

Have you ever seen “The Wire”, “Deadwood”, or “Carnivale”?

September 2, 2009 at 7:22 PM

Ivey – he’s got a point with The Wire….

… or the other two, for that matter.

But I am pumped for Pacific over anything else. I’m happy to see many of the others, like V and FlashForward, but not “pumped” for them.

I’d add Community and DEFINITELY Modern Family to the list.

Yes.

And I politely stand by my opinion that The West Wing was the best ever.

Also realizing that, as an opinion, it probably stinks, and no body shares the same :)

September 2, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Well, no … To be honest, I don’t think I’ve seen much of Carnivale

September 3, 2009 at 2:10 PM

Pretty sure Carnivale is going to be my next virgin diary…

Deadwood and The Wire beat West Wing for me too. Sorry Dorv :) Carnivale – I did watch and understand that it was well crafted, but I don’t have a lasting appreciation for it. (And it was too scary.)

The West Wing was indeed very good for the first 5 seasons after that it did goes down, sadly.

am looking forward the same shows as you plus Eastwick. As for the medical show I will probably tried all the new series Trauma, Mercy and Three Rivers and choose only one of them, enough medical show already! (I hope they arent all very good ! lol )

You mean 4 seasons? The fifth season is seen by most to be a horrible mess, and seasons 6 and 7 are more of a Josh spinoff.

September 3, 2009 at 1:28 PM

Oreo, I just don’t see things the same way as you.

The fifth season had a HUGE drop in quality, but I think most would argue it was still decent television, just crappy in comparison to the four prior seasons.

And while the second half of season six was certainly Josh heavy, I remember a lot more of the isolated episodes (One covering the West Wing, one the Vinick campaign, and then the Santos). Sure, there was more Santos than anything else, but you’d go episodes with those characters playing a minimal role (if showing up at all).

Don’t get me wrong, I love West Wing, I enjoyed all the seasons, but season 5 was the weakest by far, but still had some real standout episodes. The later seasons I just think of as a spinoff because that’s the feeling they give off. Kind of like Archie Bunker’s Place, same characters but still a spinoff.

I think I start to feel the drop that 5th year but when you love something you hold on to it as long as you can :)
