Bones is all about the dynamics

Bones has found a way to make all of its characters feel like a family without beating that dynamic against our head.

- Season 5, Episode 12 - "The Proof in the Pudding"

I talk about characters all the time. A good character, or more specifically, a good group of characters, is the backbone of any good show. The next step in that process, however, are the dynamics that are developed via back story and the interactions that occur between the characters during the course of the plot. This week’s quasi-investigation into the assassination of President John Kennedy shows very distinctly the well-written dynamics between all of the characters.

Bones and Booth
At this point, it kind of goes without saying how awesome these two are. So much subtext it’s become actual, you know, text (Which is how they used to describe Josh and Donna). Booth said it best, “You only kept looking because of me.”

Angela and Hodgins
As much as every fan on the planet seems to want these two back together, they have better chemistry apart. It was apparent when they were getting together, and it’s apparent now that they are apart.

Booth and Hodgins
One of my favorite secondary relationships on the show, these two have an unspoken respect for each other, even though it doesn’t always show. To say these two have an almost brotherly relationship would diminish Hodgins’ relationship with the oft-missed Zack, but he and Booth really have got the antagonism/respect thing down.

Cam and the Squints
No one liked her at first, either on the show, or seeming quite a few of the fans. About the same time she ingratiated herself with the fans, it also occurred with the team. She stands up for them at every turn, but reprimands them when necessary. She’s definitely the mother hen. “Mr. White, for future reference you might want to inform your bosses we don’t do half truth here.”

Sweets and, well, everyone
As professionally qualified as Sweets is, he just wants to be accepted. Not just by Booth, who both represents the ideal male and lead of the show, but by Cam and by Angela and by Hodgins. He can’t catch a break, no matter how many times he proves himself.

Like I said, good characters can’t live in a vacuum. Bones has found a way to make all of its characters feel like a family without beating that dynamic against our head. When you can put aside who you are for the sake of how you feel about another like Bones did for Booth, well, that’s love.

Other thoughts:

  • So, Bones digs some Cindi Lauper, but not Michael Jackson?
  • How can you not love Richard T. Jones … He did a great job as a freaky GSA “official”
  • I had almost forgotten about Diedrich Bader’s recurring role
  • “No, this is America, baby, we can conjecture all we want.”
  • As much as I may not love Angela and Wendell, I do love how it’s affecting her dynamic with Hodgins … It’s sad, yes, but it is interesting.
  • Cam explaining Booth’s psychology to Sweets was a bit off, right?

Excellent episode, my favorite of the season.

It’s never good when you root for the villain more than the “heroes.” Agent Ellison was so polite and professional that everyone’s childish petulance, time-wasting and rumor-mongering were really getting on my nerves. If the GSA had the authority, do your jobs so everyone can go home. If they didn’t, call the Jeffersonian’s security guards to remove them from the premises. Instead, the FBI agent shot up the place and brawled with the other government agents, but no one gets punished because nothing was official.

Agreed. Definitely best episode of the season and possibly one of the best episodes of the season on tv altogether.

I’m a latecomer to Bones, but I now find myself seeking out every repeat episode and marathon on TV so I can catch up. Your commentary about the relationships is spot on.

So far, my favorite episode is the one in which Zooey Deschanel guest-starred. It wasn’t necessarily their best ep ever, but I just adore those Deschanel gals and couldn’t wait to see how the writers would have them interact. It was appointment TV for me, and they didn’t let me down.

I agree that it was weird having Cam explain to Sweets why Booth was so invested in the body not being JFK.

I can’t decide if I am disappointed or not with the pregnancy story, I liked Can’s reaction especially the line about Bones using a chart to track a pregnancy, but i did not like how it was handled once Angela revealed the test was hers.

I didn’t find Cam explaining Booth to Sweets the least bit off.

Good, fun episode. You can’t get bogged down in any perceived reality of how things work (the GSA agents authority or lack of) because the whole show is a bit over the top. That is part of why we love it.

There’s just about anything possible wrong with this show. I mean that bogus device they put on the door was the real kicker for me this time.

There’s an episode of This American Life about a daily horror-TV-show in the 60s. People back when the episode was recorded, in the late 90s, sat down every day and watched it on SciFi and enjoyed watching it because it was so goofy.

I love Bones because of that. It’s so complete nonsensical with the over-the-top storylines of Aliens, JFK and the oh so emotional relationships between everyone. “I’m your guy, I’ll marry you” really had me going this week. I was laughing so hard about that. I have to invent some sort of drinking game for this show. It’s just so completely silly and the best thing is they all seem to take themselves seriously when you just know that in real life David Boreanaz isn’t THAT blazé to believe that these scripts, the stuff they start to portay, could be anything more than a job. I mean honestly – this show is Kitsch in HD and I love watching it every week.

This eppy was good. But it’s been five years and I’m growing impatient with Booth and Brennan, every promo I hope it’s a development of their romantic relationship. But like I said I’m impatient so maybe the pace is just right…. no it isn’t things are moving TOO SLOWLY! I want Bones to reveal what Grandpa Booth said, Booth to get emotional, them to kiss and GO on from there….

Love Cam with the pregnancy test and yelling “HODGINS!”
Sadly I like Angela and Hodgins apart and can’t help but like Wendell. He’s sweet!
