Noah Wyle on the Librarian theatrical movie

I got a chance to briefly talk to Noah Wyle about the rumored 'Librarian' theatrical movie, while he was at Comic-Con to promote his new TNT show, 'Falling Skies'. Oh, wait, you expected me to ask him about his new show?

As some of you know, I was running around pretty crazily during Comic-Con last week, trying to cover as many press rooms and panels as possible. While I wasn’t able to hit everything, I certainly can’t complain — the events I was able to fit into my schedule were well worth missing some others for.

One press room I was able to squeeze in the final minutes of was that of TNT’s new sci-fi series, Falling Skies. Haven’t heard of it? Well, that’s not surprising, as it’s not due to premiere until sometime next summer. My guess is they wanted to drum up interest for the show now, since it should jive better with the Comic-Con crowds than something like Nurse Jackie, and it’ll probably premiere before next year’s ‘Con. Besides, it has Steven Spielberg behind it, so that’s gotta mean something, right?

I didn’t have a chance to get in on the table interviews, but I found my chance to ask Falling Skies star Noah Wyle about a subject that’s actually been pretty popular as a post here at CliqueClack for a while now: what’s the status of that Librarian theatrical movie that producer Dean Devlin mentioned last year, which he said should have started shooting at the end of 2009?

Noah Wyle: I dunno what to say about that. Y’know, I love Dean’s enthusiasm about wanting to bring it to the big screen. I have a little trepidation about making that jump. If I had my druthers, we’d make about five or six more of these for TNT. On TNT, they’re monumental achievements, given the budgets we worked with and the time frames we had to shoot them in. When you decide to play professional ball and go up against movies, our meager 12-million-dollar budget is going to be compared to those hundred-million-dollar movies. And, suddenly, what kind of makes us special is our tongue-in-cheek, not taking itself too seriously….

Me: So you’re not sure you’d want to do it, if it came to that. Is that what you’re saying?

Noah Wyle: Oh I would do it, absolutely. I miss it so much, I can’t even tell you. In fact, I’m not shy to say that one of the big reasons I wanted to do this series (Falling Skies) for TNT is that Dean’s got his show (Leverage), I’ve got my show, and we can apply — pun intended — “celebrities” to TNT to make some more Librarian movies.

What do you think? Should the Librarian series remain on TV with its smaller budgets, or could it successfully make the leap to the big screen?

I think Wyle is spot on by wanting to do a bunch more of the Librarian movies on TNT. What they have done thus far has resulting in some really entertaining TV in an area, made for TV movies, that often falls flat. Taking the concept to the level of a major motion picture would necessarily result in a drastically different version. It could be successful, but I think it would lose a lot of the soul of what makes it enjoyable (at least for me) now.

I have never even head of Librarian. So I doubt a big time movie movie would work well.

I say make more TV movies. The whole idea of the movies so far is a bit hokey and works just fine on TV (they showed all three today on TNT BTW) … but I think they’d fail on the big screen

I’ll love to see more Librarian movies on TNT. I’m in the ‘not sure it will work on the big screen’ camp. Part of the attraction to the Librarian series is the wackiness of it. I don’t think that would translate well to the big screen.

I really enjoy The Librarian so far and was looking forward
to this becoming a series on TV or made for TV movies. I don’t
think it would do well on the big screen. Just watched all
three again on TNT, very entertaining. Hope more are in the works.

I hope more librarian movies will be made. I think if TNT knows people want them they will make them. Here is some contact information:
TNT

Phone 404-885-4538
Email TNT@Turner.com
If we let them know we want more Librarian movies, then perhaps they will make them. Fans were able to save Star Trek this way.
Lets contact TNT and let them know! Spread the word fans! Lets have more Librarian movies!
