The Office – Who was Andy supposed to be?

I’m sure there are many reasons why Steve Carell is leaving, but his costume last night made me hope that he isn’t letting his recent movie success go to his head. Never forget the utter failure of 'MacGruber'!

- Season 7, Episode 6 - "Costume Contest"

How awesome was last night’s cold open on The Office? No matter what else one could choose to say about the show (and there’s plenty — much of it not positive), The Office consistently excels in that first few moments of a new episode. Seeing how much Stanley wouldn’t notice was brilliant, and I loved the ideas everyone came up with. That was some good stuff, and Kevin does a wonderful Phyllis.

I’m not looking to choose sides in the Darryl/Michael fight, but having drivers selling products along their routes is a bad idea. Nothing against drivers, but I think it turns things into somewhat of a free-for-all if the guys delivering already ordered items are hawking other ones. Maybe, if they know what’s in the boxes (would they?), they could leave relevant marketing material behind. But imagine: a guy unloads an order by your receptionist’s desk, and as he’s leaving he says, “By the way, would you like to buy a printer?” Would you buy something that way?

But to the fight. Michael yelling at Kevin for chatting with Gabe was great. Kevin’s reaction was even better, and I would totally love to see him checking in with Michael going forward any time he wanted to tell Gabe something. As for Michael dressing up as Darryl and picking on him? The truth is that Michael’s never looked out for Darryl’s career. For anyone who thinks Kelly’s a potential replacement for Michael — first of all, not a chance just based on her. But second, Darryl looks to be the little go-getter that could in that office. I think he was moved upstairs with big plans in mind.

The office was abuzz with Danny (Timothy Olyphant) love, and I was surprised and impressed that Olyphant returned for round two. I loved the man-crushes, as well as the unnatural lines that are being drawn between Danny’s camp and Pam and Jim’s. Side note: I loved when Creed asked if there’d be people “Our age” at the party, and Danny said something like “Our age; sure.”

Jim and Pam confronting Danny was funny, although I can’t imagine why Jim would care for an answer to his question. I think we were supposed to say “Aww,” like Jim’s inability to understand why someone wouldn’t pursue Pam was so sweet. But let’s be honest here, folks. Whether she’s dorky (check) or not, isn’t it obvious to anyone that we’re not all made to click with each other romantically? Why didn’t Danny call Pam back? She wasn’t for him. Or he wasn’t for her. Whatever. The point is it makes more sense for them not to have worked out (odds-wise). Jim just seemed annoying as a result.

I loved Oscar constantly reminding people that the $15 thousand coupon book wasn’t actually worth that much money. He’s a really funny guy, and he gets way too little screen time. Oscar Nuñez himself is hilarious; anyone who saw The Proposal knows what I’m talking about.

At the end of the day, another decent episode from The Office. No longer a juggernaut, the show’s definitely stepping it up from last season.

I saw the cold open, which I loved loved loved. Then when the show came back on I was busy with something so I missed the first minute or so. When I first saw Michael, my first thought was..”why the heck is he dressed up like Owen Wilson? ” ..his hair was perfect Owen Wilson hair! It took me a few to get that he was MacGruber!

Sometimes I wish the cold open would expand into the episode. Not all of them are made for 22 minutes, but sometimes….

I always love the costumes.

I thought Jim and Pam cornering Danny was great. It further highlights how quirky these people are. Unless Danny (and I loovve Olyphant) can prove to be an oddball too, he can’t stay.

Agreed. I still don’t see the big picture behind Danny’s addition, but he may yet be a vehicle to something else.

In economics arational consumer is defined as the people who act in a rational way and make rational choices, namely spending their money wisely

He’s reminding people about the fact that you need to spend 200k to save 15k…

Think about it a little bit…

I’m not following. I understand the principle; all I said was Oscar’s funny as the voice of reason.

Whoops the “genius :-)” got lost while I was editing. I wanted to make a joke about the episode :-)

Got it. Nice. :)

Umm, andy was the guy from True Blood, he said it himself

October 29, 2010 at 4:02 PM

tozmervo and Paul – Thanks! I was actually taking a little dig at True Blood … if Andy hadn’t said who he was, I’d have had no idea. I’m not a fan of the show.

Ha. Until he said that he was supposed to be Bill, I thought Andy was supposed to be Edward Cullen. Can’t you just see Andy as a Twi-hard?

October 30, 2010 at 1:58 PM

It makes so much sense that Andy would want to be Bill Compton, because we know Andy likes to do Southern accents – remember that murder mystery game?

October 31, 2010 at 10:42 AM

I don’t remember – was he doing an accent this week?

Is that the guy with the bad hair and the freaky eyes?

Was Ryan supposed to be Justin Beiber?

October 31, 2010 at 10:39 AM

I just figured he was a 30+ year-old trying to look young. No idea.

How about this:

Danny is the Scranton Strangler.

Am I on to something?
