Hawaii 5-0 vs. Castle – The battle for the night continues

Despite giving Kono and Chin Ho more face time, bringing Masi Oka back, and expanding the overarching mystery, this was a lackluster episode. Even so, I'm still on team 5-0.

- Season 1, Episode 11 - "Palekaiko"

This week the CliqueClack gang had some pretty intense conversations surrounding Hawaii 5-0‘s ratings battle with Castle, and the O’Loughlin “AOL” nickname.  Although two weeks ago I threw down the gauntlet regarding 5-0’s ratings win, Carla picked it up this week and started a CliqueClack rumble. Unfortunately, there’s no clear winner. Just as both Michael and I are as equally clever as everyone else on the Internet who uses the “AOL” nickname concerning Alex “Abs of Love” O’Loughlin, both Castle and Hawaii 5-0 still give good show. Admittedly, this week wasn’t the best example of Hawaii 5-0‘s work.

Luckily it had good bits, including FINALLY giving Chin Ho and Kono an equal part in the storyline. Who doesn’t enjoy watching the wonder cousins technologically track the killer? Maybe their family owns stake in PhotoShop and FinalCut Pro. Another thing I liked included a change in the opening bonding routine. O’Loughlin and Caan have a natural on-screen chemistry which bleeds into their characters and vice-versa. However, the initial connection between O’Loughlin and Kim isn’t as strong now, so I think more on-screen time could shore that up. The show’s fun bits included Danno and McGarrett agreeing good cops feel … and then turning on the radio. Deliberate irony, thy name is bromance.  McGarrett’s use of 1970s “sexy eyes” seduction rock to annoy Danno? Nice. Danno’s tie-plea? Funny. Danno calling the Hawaii visiting P.I. “stalkerrazzo-Magnum”? Funnier. The ending with the deepening of the McGarrett family mystery? Ooh-inspiring.

Despite the interesting parts, the show felt disjointed. I missed the full team interaction. 40% of the show followed McGarrett and Danno, 40% followed Chin Ho and Kono, and the final 20% surrounded the storyline. Is there a way to give 25% to Danno and McG, 25% to Chin Ho and Kono, 25% to the team, and 25% to the case of the week? Masi Oka felt wasted as the guest star. Plus, I had too many questions:

  • Why did 5-0 get this case? It isn’t a terrorist, it isn’t related to the governor’s friend, and none of the team has a personal connection to it. Normally, the writers vaguely explain why 5-0 might handle a kidnapping over the local PD.
  • So, Chin Ho was McGarrett’s dad’s partner when the dad retired? I thought the Chin was drummed off the force while McGarrett’s dad remained behind.
  • If the killer’s fiancee left him in Barbados, why did he frequent Hawaii as opposed to the Caribbean for his kill site? On a side note, Kono not seeing Hawaii as an exotic vacation spot is just what a former Hawaiian friend of mine said.
  • For the final victim, if the front desk calls her on her cellphone, says they can’t transfer the call to her cell but tells her to walk to the 2nd floor as opposed to the front desk, doesn’t that smell like a set up? Also, when did she have the time to change clothes if she was in a rush to answer that “emergency” call?
  • How many cars does McGarrett have? I thought he only owned the tiny sports car.
  • Why does McGarrett introduce himself as 5-0 to off-islanders? Would they really know who that is? Admittedly, McGarrett’s presence, voice, and muscled bulletproof vest might indicate something police (or brute force) affiliated.

The bad bits included O’Loughlin’s continuing inability to yell “no” convincingly while shooting another “meglomaniacal” suspect who disappears over a cliff. Honestly, the only really good thing this week was CliqueClack’s debate (see Carla’s post for more) and the Clackers (almost) unanimously agreeing on O’Loughlin’s mega-hotness. Mr. Noble, I will heartily accept images of a shirtless O’Loughlin as an apology. :)

Quotes:

“A possible abduction? Either you’re abducted or you’re not.” – Chin Ho

“Love is blind.” –Kono, about the victim of the week and her mega-plain husband
“Not that blind.” – Danno

“The trunk of my car is bigger than your apartment.” – Chin Ho to Konno

“Book me if you want to.” -Visiting P.I.
“Do not say it.” – Danno to McGarrett

“Please don’t make me wear flowers.”  – Danno

“This guy is beyond disturbed. I bet he even eats from the buffet line.” – Danno, on the criminal of the week

I love that they are using Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park more too. They are great. I think I am going to start a petition however to get Masi Oka a more permanent role on the show. I am probably in the minority here but along with Zachary Quinto, he was the only reason I stayed with Heroes.
It was interesting to see Joel Tobeck also. It was weird to hear him speak without the Irish accent he had on Sons of Anarchy though. I am sure he has been acting but until now, I don’t remember him in anything since he played Strife on Xena/Hercules.
With this show though, it seems I am more interested in the “fringe” characters than in the McGarrett/Danno relationship. Weird.

I almost had a heart attack when I realized they allowed both Chin Ho and Kono equal face time. I like Masi Oka but I don’t want him to overwhelm the plot. My other concern is the governor painted him as an insanely brilliant, highly in-demand coroner. So, I’m surprised the usual red tape didn’t recur this time around and that HPD, etc. would use him for a seemingly non-bizarre crime. Good catch on Joel Tabeck’s ‘Xena’ days. I didn’t recognize him without the bleach blonde hair.

The only good part was your debate? This epi was awesome! We finally get some sense of that darned Champ box, and we find out about Steve’s mother! And how poignant about the guy and his dad. That family was a mess. So much of a mess that his sister has disappeared again and did not get the memo about their mother, but that backstory interests me. And the Steve/Danno banter continues to tickle, including their performance for the killer. I don’t know how he’s yelling no wrong. It just sounds like no to me.

Why is this article named Hawaii 5-0 vs Castle -The battle for the night continues???? There was no battle H50 won the night
with a 2.8 demo and Castle only got a 1.9 demo. I like Castle but
H50 is the stronger show. Since Castle doesn’t have DWTS as a lead in it has to pull it’s numbers on it’s own and they are just
not there.
