Bones isn’t cold, and her friends should know that!

Does Bones want to be a mother? If Booth has anything to do with it, sure ... but this episode had me wondering how well her friends really understand her.

- Season 6, Episode 21 - "The Sign in the Silence"

Don’t let my name fool you, but I am a guy (If you don’t believe me, there’s a picture at the bottom of the post). Being a guy, there’s no way I’ve ever been able to fully comprehend the concept of the proverbial “biological clock ticking.” I have always wondered, though. Which pressure is greater: Biological or societal? I’m sure the biological pull to reproduce is great; but I have seen time and time again, the obnoxiousness that can be baby-related peer pressure. Bones has been exploring the art of baby making (no, not that part, get your mind out of the gutter), for a while now.

In the cold open, Booth was the perfect example of this. The pressure on women — and young families in general — to have kids must be phenomenal. Friends, though, should be friends, and not pressure each other. As we saw with Hodgins and Angela, young couples don’t need any more pressure. Brennan, though, will make an excellent mother, and it is understandable for Booth to want to see his friend evolve into the new role.

I have always liked episodes that deal with Brennan’s experience as a foster child. I wouldn’t go as far to call her cold (as she chastised Sweets for), but neither is she an open, loving person. Her backstory, especially in early seasons as the audience got to know the character better, is what humanizes her. Bones has always been able to connect better when she has some emotional skin the game … That might be an obvious statement to make, but, in her case, it is one of the few times she is able to connect (setting aside, obviously, relationships that she’s developed over time).

This is the Temperance “Bones” Brennan that I love. She doesn’t need to defend herself, especially to her friends. She’s not cold. Because of everything she experienced as a child, she cannot easily connect with people. That’s not so crazy, and it is what defines her as a character.. This is the Brennan that pledges to find Amy’s real parents, the Brennan that has dedicated her life to giving the unknown dead their identities back. The one that has worked with her partner for six years to catch the guilty. This is the Brennan that makes this show what it is.

Notes & Quotes

  • “Please Bones, I tell you what.  When you get a good luck at that pudgy little baby face, your hormones are going to go wacko. And before you know … BANG! Bumba Bones!” – Booth
“That’s not how it happens, Booth.” – Bones
“I think that’s how it works [smiling]” – Booth
  • I actually thought “Deaf mute” was the appropriate term, but I guess I’ll start using “Deaf and uncommunicative.”
  • “And who are you?” – Meachum
“Dr. Brennan is the best forensic anthropologist in the country.” – Caroline
    “World.” – Bones
  • The idea that sign language can have an accent or dialect? Pretty cool when you think about it.
  • I’m a bit ashamed I had to look up who played the father, but yep … it was Sean O’Bryan of Persons Unknown “fame.”
  • “I know how it feels not to trust anyone. People lie … but bones always tell the truth.” – Bones
  • “OK … Baby! Oh … OK … BABY! OK … OK … BABY!” – Hodgins
“According to the birthing class,  that is so not how you’re supposed to react right now.” – Angela

The only two people who seemed to question her was the Squintern whose name I cannot remember and Sweets.

The Squintern I can understand. He’s not a close friend, and he always sees her cold facade. He also wasn’t there in Season 1, when Bones had that huge explanation as to why she focuses so much on the facts and tries to not let any of the emotion get to her. (I believe it was the Boy in the Bush)

However, Sweets should know her much better. He knows her history and he has seen how passionate she can get about cases, especially cases involving minors. His attitude was *very* out of character, and it irritated me.

I agree. I’m one of the last few remaining fans of Sweets as a character, but even I was irritated with that. It was very out of character for him.

It’s just lazy writing, something this show seems to suffer more and more of late. They needed someone to question her humanity so they pawned it off on Sweets, even though he of all people knows that her seeming coldness is just a front for emotional pain. He’s actually said it outright a number of times. They should’ve used their guest star, the child advocate, to question her humanity, since she doesn’t know Brennan. it would’ve made a lot more sense.

I couldn’t agree more … the advocate would have been a much better choice.

I’ve always been a fan of Sweets. I get why some people have never liked him (and many have previously, but now do not), but not me :)
