Ratings Clack – NHL, the Community of sports

The summer TV season hit with full force last week, as we saw the networks spending more time airing repeats than originals. Sports helped ease the transition a bit. The NBA, NASCAR, and the NHL all entered prime time, to wildly differing results. On cable, Paris Hilton is back...

ABC - With the NBA Finals (15.17m/6.5 – 15.52m/6.5), ABC was easily the big winner of the week. The two games combined made for the #1 viewer and demo titles for the week. The Jimmy Kimmel Pre-Game (3.53m/1.1 – 3.46m/1) was not as well received. The rest of the rather slow week included The Bachelorette (7.23m/2.2), Extreme Makeover Weight Loss (7.11m/2.4), and Food Revolution (2.4m/.8).

NBC - The peacock had sports as well, but unfortunately it was the NHL Finals (4.56m/1.8). Much like Community, people that watch it think it’s the bee’s knees, but most people just can’t be bothered to tune in. The news was much better on the summer Tuesday. America’s Got Talent (15.28m/4.3) returned to a very good number, and The Voice (14.41m/4.9) followed with another great outing. In more premiere news, Love Bites (2.64m/1) went by almost unnoticed. I’m guessing the 10PM premiere didn’t help matters. The rest of the week brought L&O LA (6.59m/1.5) and Friday Night Lights (2.89m/.8).

FOX - In the middle of the prime time sports pack was NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 (8.13m/2.5). The only other new programming from FOX was So You Think You Can Dance (8.57m/3.1 – 8.06m/2.9).

CBS - Not even trying, the CBS week was made up of a Friday Flashpoint (6.7m/1.1) and a Saturday Chaos (3.12m/.4).

CW – It was all repeats, all the time.

CABLE - There were a number of premieres on cable last week, and some did better than others, although none of them are really much to write home about. From the ‘well…ok…’ department we have TNT’s Franklin & Bash (2.75m/.9) and Men Of A Certain Age (1.85m/.4). With The Closer regularly finishing in the 5-6 million viewer range these are both a little disappointing. It could be worse though… Bravo’s latest, Platinum Hit (.82m/.4) was very slow out of the gate.It would seem that Kara DioGuardi has found the next The One, rather than the next Idol. Again though, it could be worse… Someone at Oxygen thought it would be a good idea to give Paris Hilton another show. It wasn’t. The World According To Paris (.41m/.2) was largely ignored.

Basic:

  • The Killing (1.97m/.4)
  • Secret Life of the American Teenager (2.12m/.9)
  • Breakout Kings (2.01m/.8)
  • South Park (2.56m/1.4)
  • Workaholics (1.66m/.9)
  • Pawn Stars (5.2m/1.9 – 5.23m/1.9)
  • Tosh.0 (3.02m/1.8)
  • Deadliest Catch (3.58m/1.7)

Premium:

  • Game of Thrones (2.4m/.9)
  • Treme (.53m/.2)

That photo is hilarious. That is exactly the face I’d expect Abed to make if he was playing hockey.

Abed playing hockey would make for a great fantasy sequence.

I could see them doing a Sports Movie ala Hoosiers homage. Abed would so get into that.
