Supernatural – Young, sexy, and with a raincoat

What did you think of the seventh(!) season premiere of 'Supernatural'? Deb and I weight in on our thoughts and some pressing questions left on the table.

- Season 7, Episode 1 - "The New Boss"

Keith: First of all, I’m with you and I really love the season premiere recap opening sequences, mostly because I’m a sucker for ’70s and ’80s tunes.

Deb: It just brings back all the excitement! We know we’re glad the show’s back, but when you’ve got that music and all of those memorable scenes, it pulls you right back in.

Keith: So, following this episode, what did you think? Happy with the way things are going? I’m not so sure I like this leviathan storyline. I honestly hope it wraps up pretty quickly, because as bad as they seem to be in how they’re affecting Castiel, they’re not Death or Lucifer. At least not yet.

Deb: My biggest thing is that I hope they don’t get so caught up in this story arc that they forget what this show is all about. I’d heard it was supposed to get back to the old days, but it’s getting so convoluted now and I’m hoping they can get out of it. They’ve done it before, but they just set up two huge story arcs this season (Castiel and the leviathans, and Sam’s “halicunations”).

Keith: Speaking of hallucinations, do you think that’s all they are? Is Lucifer actually reaching out beyond the cage and causing some influence? Is Lucifer just lying to Sam that he’s in the cage, with all that’s going on around him being what’s the illusion? Or is Lucifer speaking the truth here? My gut tells me that we will either see that come to a conclusion rather quickly, like perhaps even within the next episode or two, or if it becomes a season-long ordeal, that Lucifer is actually speaking the truth, and this season will come to one huge “how the hell are they going to get out of this?” ending, and the finale has Sam waking up in the cage.

Deb: It will be interesting to see how they do it. The seem to have backed themselves into a corner. The only way to save Sam is to have Cas back, so one of these arcs is going to have to get resolved.

Keith: Here’s a thought. At first I thought what what was going on with Castiel — with the voices in his head — was the “real” God basically coming down on him for wronging him. That actually turned out to be the leviathans talking. Now I’m wondering if “God” — in Supernatural — is actually meant as more of a status symbol, like being a king — like an heir to the throne, so to speak.

Deb: All I know is that it was totally worth it all to hear Castiel say, “That was unpleasant.”

Keith: One last thing. Castiel mentioned something to Crowley (by the way — love that Crowley’s back) about making sure Michael is left in the cage, in hell. I wonder if that’s the key to stopping all of this with Cas and the leviathans: letting Michael out of the cage, which means Lucifer with him, most likely. Despite whether or not Sam’s visions cease, we’ll see Lucifer “in the flesh” sooner or later.

Wait! I went to bed to early and didn’t approve this post … it’s missing the hilarious ways the boys and Bobby referenced God Castiel: God part deux, New and Improved, and my favorite: Trench Coat on a Tortilla!

God has a plan. He was the prophet two seasons ago. He is overseeing all that is happening. What his plan is, though, remains to be seen.

Crowley and Death are the best additions to the show ever. I do hope we get to see more of them.
