Community’s best episodes – Quibbling Siblings

Every week brother and sister team Bob and Debbie take on a new topic. This week we discuss the best episodes of 'Community' and we even pick a favorite.

Debbie:

Last week’s episode of Community, “Remedial Chaos Theory,” was spectacular. I loved everything about it, from the six versions of the timelines, to Britta singing “Roxanne” to the completely whacked out ending. It got me to thinking about my all-time favorite episodes of Community (to which this episode is now added). …

Introduction to Statistics” — or, Abed as Batman — was the Community episode that blew the hatch for me, and somehow everything was shinier after that episode. Abed really became Abed that day, and the Abed and Troy dynamics took on a whole new level.

Modern Warfare” — otherwise known as the paintball episode — I probably don’t have to say much about, since it’s got to be everyone’s favorite episode, right?

Physical Education” — that’s the naked pool episode for you beginners — is probably the episode that made me laugh out loud the most. I thought I was going to break a rib laughing during that pool game.

I just realized that all of those episodes were from the first season, so I’ll leave you to tackle season two … and go!

Bob:

Yes, last week’s episode was amazing. I loved it too and thought it was one of the better episodes the show has put out. I enjoyed all the ones that you mentioned and looking through the episodes from season two there were a bunch of great ones there too.

Epidemiology” – Another Halloween episode. I think this was so effective for me because I didn’t know that it was going to be a “zombie episode” going into it, so it was a fun surprise. The show did a brilliant job of playing off so many horror movie cliches.

Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas” – It’s Community — in stop motion animation.

A Fistful of Paintballs” – I was nervous that Community was going to shoot itself in the foot by doing another paintball episode, especially considering how good the first one was. The two part season finale, however, may have one upped the paintball episode in season one. It was fantastic (and bonus points for being a two parter).

I feel like I’m leaving a bunch of episodes out, though: how about the Dungeons and Dragons episode that had a whole lot of heart to it. The episode with Troy’s 21st birthday wasn’t popular with everyone, but I thought it was pretty brilliant, bringing the show to a more introspective and somber place. How about the bottle episode? Or the episode where Jeff becomes a pawn in a (fake) conspiracy theory. Or the bizarreness of the trampoline episode. Too… many… good… episodes!

 Debbie:

Oh, I know I left episodes out of my season one favorites too, like the pottery class and the Good Fellas chicken finger episode.

My favorite part of “Epidemiology” was making fun that the black guy never makes it even close to the end of the movie, like the equivalent of being a red shirt.

I need to disagree with you about the second paintball episode. While I loved it, I didn’t think it was as good as the first one, probably because the originality of the first held so much value for me.

Could you pick an all-time favorite episode?

 Bob:

I’m not sure that I could. It would probably be that first paintball episode, because I think it’s when the show catapulted from great comedy to one of my favorites of all time.

The pottery class episode was great. Absolutely No Ghosting!

Can you pick a favorite?

 Debbie:

I think I did when I said that “Modern Warfare” was everyone’s favorite episode … looks like you and I qualify as everyone.

I know I’m in the minority, but one of my favourites is Basic Rocket Science (the Apollo 13 episode). I’m a sucker for puns and the “Kentucky Fried Chicken 11 Herbs and Space Experience” had me LOLing. It’s also probably the best example of product placement done right.

Last week’s episode was good, but not great. I didn’t like how far back they rewound every time Jeff was going to flip the dice again. Imagine if Groundhog Day showed you the same 40 second clip every time he woke up again? They could’ve just as easily edited it down and had Jeff clip the dice and shown their cool six-slot graphic… but that’s probably nit-picking and I’m really not pretentious…

The Abed As Batman episode was phenomenal, and I kept it on my DVR for over a year (until my cable company had a spasm and the box reset itself). The chicken fingers mafia episode was great. The zombies halloween episode, while not as good as the other halloween episode, was great.

The Dungeons and Dragons episode and the stop-motion animation episode are two of my favorites: so daring, so built upon the characters, so layered. they were excellent!

I agree. Tack on Modern Warfare, and you have the reason’s why Community is great tri-fecta. I’ve watched all three episodes at least 3 times.

It would be much easier for me to pick the episodes I didn’t like.
