American Horror Story – Slicing up an American Pie

Nine episodes into this new series, and we finally get some idea of a possible plot. Could Constance's medium friend be right for what one of Vivien's babies means to the world?

- Season 1, Episode 9 - "Spooky Little Girl"

You may have recognized the newly-revealed resident of Murder House as none other than Mena Suvari of the American Pie movies. American PieAmerican Horror Story. Coincidence? Probably. In any case, it’s interesting how new dead folks decide to make an appearance once in a while, as though they “awaken” only during certain times or situations. The male couple, for example — where are they? Where do they go when they’re not walking around the house? Does this also mean the actress will be back again?

A couple of odd things occurred to me during this episode. Firstly, do the Harmons have any other family or friends? Poor Vivien is locked away in a mental facility, and the only people she can look forward to visiting her are Ben and Constance? I get that they moved from Boston, but are you telling me neither one of them kept in close contact with friends or even old colleagues in the Bay State? The other weird thing: where the hell was Violet in this episode? Doesn’t she have some concern for her locked up mom?

There were a few big revelations of sorts in this episode, so let’s run down those one by one. First, we find out Vivien is having twins … of different fathers (Heteropaternal Superfecundation, it was called). That makes things really interesting, especially if/when they both are born and we possibly get a sibling rivalry to end all sibling rivalries … which leads to the next big bit o’ knowledge thrown upon us: an actual plot.

We now have the makings of what ‘s likely going on with the Murder House, the living dead people and Vivien’s babies, or at least one of them. The medium tells Constance one hell of an interesting story about “The Pope’s Box” and what it could possibly mean for the baby Tate made with Vivien. So we have a good-vs.-evil thing going on, right inside Vivien’s womb? Woah. And now we also have a possible line toward why these dead people don’t “die” and are able to interact with the living in a major way. So major, in fact, that they’re able to kill! Now things are starting to make sense, at least as much as they can make sense on this show.

Lastly, we have the real Moira appearing to Ben. I’m really looking forward to seeing the aftereffects of his witnessing her transformation to the older woman. Will she continue to appear that way to him, or will she be back to her younger self next time? Since Ben is a very no-nonsense shrink, I’m guessing he’s going to just discount the whole thing as being some weird episode of delusion, brought on by his guilt for having cheated on Vivien.

I have one question about Travis, the latest new resident of Murder House. At one point, after having sex with him, Hayden asks, “Is your mom gonna be pissed?” So … Travis … he’s not the fourth son of Constance, is he? I guess that would answer the question of where that last child of hers was, but it doesn’t make sense. I’m going to write it off as her just calling Constance “mom” as in “she’s old enough to be your mom.” Right?

(EDIT: For those wondering about “The Pope’s Box,” I believe the writers took some liberties with the third secret of Fatima and intermingled it into a Pope’s coronation. I could be wrong.)

I think Violet might actually be dead. She hasn’t left the house or gone to school in two weeks, as of last week. I have a really weird feeling its going to be her dead body that is found next week in the crawl space.

I agree. Check back for a post I’m writing up with all the evidence that shows that’s true. Tonight’s preview adds more support for the theory!

I agree too but didn’t want to steal Carla’s thunder in mentioning it here first.

Love the show but I wish they would not be so explicit with the sex scenes.. It’s not needed because the cast and the storyline are more believable without the distraction of a, what seems like, a porno movie in a movie. … It takes away from the story. Great storyline and characters!

December 1, 2011 at 12:00 PM

OH HUSH! I take it you’ve never seen a porno movie. Because if you had you would know that this isn’t even 5% of what a porno is. They use the scenes to show how sexually unstable the DR. is. It is needed to build that part of the feel of the story

I agree with violet being dead. Because of the overdose on pills. I think that Ben will end up going crazy now because he has seen Moria in her true self. I love this show though, and has kept me on the edge of my seat since the beginning. I’m still trying to piece things together but I believe all viewers are. But now with the talk of the end of the world with the pope talk. I guess the baby rate created will be the anti-Christ. So when is the last episode with this season? I know they’re going to leave us hanging lol.

And also, did anyone else like the Black Dahlia murder reference???

December 1, 2011 at 11:45 AM

I didnt understand the black Dahila thing? I mean I heard of it but I didn’t understand how it goes with the story.

December 2, 2011 at 1:49 AM

The Black Dahlia murder reference was well placed. I read about it some time ago… I had to explain it to my wife. BTW, this show is amazing!

The crazy looking guy that was in the attic all deformed is the fourth child of Constance. She had 2 daughters and 2 sons i believe.

December 1, 2011 at 2:29 AM

I’m pretty sure that all we know about are Tate, Adelaide and Beau. She has a fourth child, but I don’t recall a reference as to whether it is a son or a daughter.

I would be smart writing for the reference to be about her age, but to make use wonder. I hope Travis isn’t the fourth kid, because I’m looking forward to a more intriguing story about him/her.

December 9, 2011 at 4:37 AM

I was right, the deformed kid BO in the attic was the fourth child.

I feel the need to further pint out that on the AHS interactive family portrait, on fx’s website [hxxp://www.fxnetworks.com/ahsfamily/], Adelaide is NOT referred to as a singular person. The young and old Adelaide are seen holding hands with the title “The DaughterS Adelaide” and their description is, “The Girls next door have an annoying habit of stopping by uninvited. To deliver Death Threats.” I assumed most people knew this. It appears Constance had two daughters named Adelaide most likely one replaced the other that died. So it goes 1st Adelaide, 2nd Adelaide, 3rd Tate, 4th Beauregard in order of introduction.

I’m sure Hayden was just making a crack about Travis hooking up with the (much) older Constance when she called her his “mom.”

As to where everyone goes, they’re just spirits and they don’t manifest themselves all the time. Just because this is the first time we’ve seen The Black Dahlia appear doesn’t mean it’s the first time she’s been to the house since 1947. Maybe Tate told her about Ben, or Moira did for that matter.

As for Moira’s appearance, I’m betting that’s the way Ben sees her from now on, if she comes back that is, because as she said, he’s beginning to see things the way they really are. She appears young and beautiful only to men, because that’s how men want to see her (or at least that’s her own perception of how men want to see her). With Ben’s epiphany about the rubber suit, Moira changed. But, the real question about Moira is she died when she was young so why has she aged or why does she appear aged to women?

I was also wondering where Violet was, although Ben did tell Moira to make her a sandwich at one point because she was camping out in her room. So, Ben saw her but we didn’t. I’m not sure that she’s dead, yet, at least from what I saw in the preview unless it was a flashback where Tate was begging her not to leave him. If she is dead, she doesn’t have much of a choice other than to stay. But, Ben could have seen a ghost too so we’ll have to wait till next week to see for sure.

December 1, 2011 at 6:16 AM

wow you guys have gone so much further in analysing the show than me.. i jsut cant wait to see what they dream up next and enjoy the acting so much particularly Jessica Lange =my god isnt she phenomenal???? i agree as well that the sexual stuff is a BIT overbaord for shock value butthe show is nevewr borning anyhow!!!! i love it.

December 1, 2011 at 7:04 AM

I totally agree about all the sex its just like enough already we get the point! You know I just thought it was crazy when Hayden’s sister walked in! ….And ok they saw her? So everyone can see these ghosts i just get more confused. It’s just started to make me wonder if they are all dead!

December 1, 2011 at 12:06 PM

Hayden had mention in a earlier episode that the house has a power which they can use to makk them visible. She has been experimenting with it ever since she figured it out. Hence having sex with Travis

December 1, 2011 at 9:58 AM

Well, they can see whichever ghosts are choosing to be visible. Every character can see Moira, for example, because she chooses to be visible all the time. As another example, the surgeon, Dr. Montgomery, just turns up to dismember the body. It seems that the ghosts that know they are dead are more able to be visible and interact with the living.
I also think that we knew before this episode that the ghosts of the house could kill if they desired. The ghosts very early on dispatched those two children which entered the house to destroy things. Also, Tate and the other ghosts killed the home invaders.

December 2, 2011 at 12:15 AM

Never heard of the Pope’s Box but then again, there are alot of myths surrounding him. As a note, the writers gooned with the reference to the conception of Christ being the Immaculate Conception. The Immaculate Conception is Mary, who was born with the stain of Original Sin.

December 2, 2011 at 1:13 AM

I love all the ideas from this. I just can’t wait to see how everything plays out. I hate waiting til next Wednesday! So do you think the security guard will be gone now? And with Violet overdosing on the pills it only shows her being dragged away by Tate. from then on she has only been seen in her room and at Constance’s house right? Maybe Travis is her son, they never showed them being sexual. And she pays for everything for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a twist to come. It’s hard to piece together all the hints dropped along the way.

December 2, 2011 at 4:26 AM

I love all your ideas. It never occurred to me that violet might be dead. Anyway, I have a a theory for myself. I love how the writers use little lines to foresee future events, whether it happens later in that episode or in the series. An example is that Iskandarien guy who wanted to buy the property, before Moira gave him a blowjob he said, ‘No teeth’. And later in the episode we all know what happened.

Here in THIS episode, we hear Hayden mention she can never become pregnant, after the dude came in her. Could there be a plot twist and have her pregnant only to give birth to the ‘anti-Christ’ baby being since the dude was alive and she was dead when the act was done. Hmm… I wonder.

And anyway, whatever happened to Ben’s sleepwalking/fire fetish? This is just my two cents, I hoped it contributed to this well of theories. By the way, sorry if this sounds stupid, but is the pope box real?

December 2, 2011 at 7:25 AM

I believe the sleepwalking was due to Moira drugging Ben, to get him over the spot where her body is to dig it up.

December 2, 2011 at 12:05 PM

Thats a great theory about the Hayden/Travis baby – I hadn’t thought of that! This show keeps so many twists and turns so who knows? I also think that Violet might be dead. I can’t wait until next week!

December 2, 2011 at 9:22 AM

oh wow, that actually would make sense if violet were dead already because we hardly ever see her, but I really doubt that because she was able to leave the house when her mother took her to that hotel and she did visit constance’s house, so i don’t think violet is a ghost. it would be pretty annoying if she was a ghost because i like to think of the Harmon family separately from the ghosts of the house hoold.

December 2, 2011 at 9:23 AM

The thought is she killed herself (or was killed) after that visit to Constance’s house. Since then, we haven’t seen her leave the house.

December 2, 2011 at 10:39 PM

Violet has to be dead, because she saw those teenagers Tate killed when they were at the beach, not in the house (which is the only place living are supposed to see the dead) I’m wondering if they will play out good vs evil between the twins Vivien is carrying.

December 3, 2011 at 12:02 AM

Violet was able to see the teens because it was Oct 31. The dead can walk the earth (outside the house)only on Oct 31. That is how Tate could leave the house as did the other dead characters. Sadly the show will be cancelled long before the twins grow up so no good vs evil – lol.

December 3, 2011 at 12:05 AM

It’s renewed for at least another season already.

December 3, 2011 at 12:10 AM

October 31, 2011

FX announced today that its freshman drama American Horror Story has been renewed for a second season. The good news comes just four episodes into the show’s run, which already has it on track to become the network’s highest rated first season ever.

13 episodes have been ordered for Season 2 of American Horror Story. Nine episodes remain in its first season

December 10, 2011 at 1:29 AM

Great comments. Did Vivien and the security guard really have an affair? I assume they did since the security guard explained to Ben that he is shooting blanks. Does anyone know?

December 10, 2011 at 4:26 PM

I don’t think they did. Vivien fantasized about him in that one scene, but I think that’s all that’s happened between them.

The comment about blanks I took to be just something he said to further clarify that even if they were together, no way he was the other father.
