30 Rock – It’s a Jack Off!

I think '30 Rock' got the biggest laugh of the season out of me this week, as Jack, negotiating with himself declared a Jack Off.

- Season 6, Episode 5 - "Today You Are a Man"

I’ve been really happy with the sixth season of 30 Rock so far. Granted, it’s only six episodes into the new season, but I feel like the show has avoided a lot of its regular pit falls. There have not been any distracted guest spots (yes, there have been guests, but they have not overshadowed the regular cast). Also, just about all of the characters have been featured in every episode. No case of the missing Jenna or absent Pete so far.

Of course any episode is helped out when Jack and Liz are paired off in a storyline together. In fact, there were great pairings this episode in general, as Jenna and Tracy tend to bring out the crazy in each other (even more than usual). I really loved Jack and Liz negotiating, though. Plus, it gave us Alec Baldwin declaring a Jack Off. Can it get better than that? I also loved Liz’s look directly at the camera as she noted that there was still room for growth between her and Jack.

Yes, yes. After six years, there are still good stories to be told at 30 Rock.

Quotes:

“Kenneth! Just move!” – Jenna, to a full recycling bin

“Getting paid to help a boy become a man? It’s kind of my wheelhouse.” – Jenna, on being paid to appear at a Bar Mitzvah

“Going mano a mano against a real adversary — me. It’s the ultimate game. Jack Donaghy … playing with himself. It’s a Jack off!” – Jack

“No one has ever won a land war in Russia: not Napoleon, not Hitler, not even Balki in the unaired ninth season of Perfect Strangers.” – Jack

“Everyone expects me to dance with a girl today and I don’t know about girls. I mean, I’ve played this Japanese video game where you slap prostitutes to death, but you only dance with this penguin.” – Adam

“You didn’t realize emotion could be a weapon? Have you not read the poetry of Jewel?” – Liz

Very funny episode, even if some of it did feel recycled from previous episodes (at least thematically). Anytime Jack & Liz get to spend some substantial time together, it’s going to make for a good episode. Only Liz would use a chunky orange watch as an accessory to her power outfit!

The Kenneth stuff…promising? If they actually follow through and try and develop him, that has to be an improvement consdering he’s the most stagnant character by far!
