The Voice – We didn’t see that one coming

When you toss in the unpredictability of the voting public, Katie bar the door ... because the obvious choice isn't so obvious and you don't know what you're going to get sometimes.

- Season 2, Episode 13 - "Live Eliminations, Week 2"

Well … I didn’t see that one coming.

From Adam’s team, Pip and Karla were my hopefuls for oust-age. For Cee Lo’s team, I picked Erin and Cheesa. Three of the four for the initial consideration “made” it to the bottom. However, I completely underestimated the popularity of Pip. (Shut it, Ivey.) That’s the thing with reality-based competitions which throw voting privileges to the public — you never know what’s going to crop up in the grand scheme of things. And one of those “things” was the out-of-left-field inclusion of Tony Vincent to the mix. That one threw me for a loop.

And then, to see Cee Lo give a nod to Cheesa instead of Tony (“My mind says Tony, but my heart says Cheesa”) … well, that was the kicker right there. Remember the outstanding duet he had with Justin Hopkins? Alone, that was the added weight on the scale which should have seen him advance. And — misstep with “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” notwithstanding — by all rights he shouldn’t have been let go.

So, really … what was the determining factor? Was it the Marilyn Mansonesque take on “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” with Tony’s dark, low, almost-growl that swayed Cee Lo Cheesa’s way? Or was she really that good in her final performance?

No. Cheesa wasn’t that good. She wasn’t Tony’s superior. She was, however, the more convincing of the two. Her “All By Myself” (a song which I adore, by the way) may have been uneven in spots, but the exudation with which she performed it was the deciding factor for Cee Lo, much to Tony’s chagrin.

This much I “know”: Of the two, Tony had the better chance of making it into the finals. Cheesa does not.

Something looked fishy with the way the whole thing went down; not saying that anything untoward happened, but it didn’t look like Cee-Lo was finished talking.

Well, it was a shocking night of eliminations all around!
