Who is your favorite buddy cop duo? – Clacking in Color

Most crime procedurals follow the same bland formula, but a quirky new cop show on the USA network has clacker Jaylen Christie hooked! In this week's 'Clacking in Color,' the groovy column about minorities on TV, he asks readers to reveal their favorite buddy cop duo and why! Woohoo!

Who is your favorite buddy cop duo? - Clacking in Color

Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I’ve never been a fan of crime procedurals. I just feel as though television is practically oversaturated with them. Has Hollywood really run out of ideas? Perhaps that’s a topic for another column. Still, after making a shocking discovery this weekend by realizing that I actually have On Demand on my cable box, I decided to peruse the USA Network selection by watching the first two episodes of Common Law, a quirky crime procedural utilizing the buddy cop duo dynamic.

This clichéd device is something that can be found in most procedurals, but it seems that the folks at USA got it right with this one. Common Law focuses on two policemen with issues serious enough to land them in couples’ counseling … but here’s the catch: they’re straight! They bicker like a married couple and squabble like siblings, but they can’t seem to live without one another. Hilarious, right? I think it’s clever.

Furthermore, it’s nice to see Golden Globe nominee Michael Ealy on television again. As Travis Marks, a streetsmart detective who spent his life as a foster child, Ealy is definitely given a lot to do in Common Law. It’s even hard for his costars to keep up with him. As an aspiring actor, it’s refreshing to see people on screen that look like me. Ealy is one of those talents that really knows how to light up a screen. Perchance this is his moment to shine.

I digress. Anyway, after watching Common Law, it got me to thinking about all of the other cop shows that utilize the same buddy cop duo dynamic — something that has proven effective as evidenced by the millions of individuals that tune in to these shows on a continual basis.

To that end, who is your favorite buddy cop duo?

While Travis and his partner Wes are still growing on me, I think I may have to go with Shawn and Gus from Psych, another one of USA’s top rated shows. With them, I get the sense that they are soulmates and genuinely care for one another. Sure they may talk a lot of trash, but you know that at the end of the day both of them have each other’s backs. It also doesn’t hurt that one of the leads is a person of color. I mean, let’s keep it real, folks. This is Clacking in Color, after all. Personally I think it’s refreshing that the USA network has given us not one, but two pretty good shows with a buddy cop duo consisting of smart African-American characters. Psych’s Gus really knows how to keep Shawn in check, and Dule Hill is a genius in the role while Common Law’s Travis really knows a thing or two about staying ahead of the baddies. The USA network seems to know the value of diversity in their casting choices.

And for that matter, so does CBS. After all, LL Cool J is the perfect ying to Chris O’Donnell’s yang in NCIS:Los Angeles. And kudos to ABC and Fox for giving us Castle and Bones respectively, two procedurals utilizing the buddy cop dynamic but with sharp female leads. See? Diversity really is the spice of life, people!

I’m curious to know who your favorite buddy cop team is. Is there a network that seems to get it right? Feel free to let me know. In the meantime, I may have to rethink my opinions regarding some procedurals. Common Law seemed to have me at hello. While nothing really separates it from other cop shows, it is nice to see Ealy back on the small screen. It’s also nice to know that a brother is getting paid. That’s always a good thing, right? Still, is there anything the show could do different? Is it all really one big cliché?

Eh, if it ain’t broke … don’t fix it.

Castle and Beckett. Or, old school, Tudy and Muldoon on Car 54.

Car 54? Hmmm… I don’t think I’ve heard of that one. Kudos to you for mentioning Castle and Beckett! They’re awesome! Great chemistry too! I’m a big fan of Nathan Fillion. I think that dude is cooler than a polar bear’s backside! LOL

In the 60s, Car 54 had Ossie Davis and Nipsey Russell in the squadroom. Also forgot Miami Vice, with Crockett and Tubbs.

Totally forgot about Miami Vice! That was an awesome show! Classic even!

Polar bear’s backside is grateful to be mentioned in the same sentence as Nathan Fillion.

NEW YORK UNDERCOVER!It was urban, hip and had crazy plot twists! Plus is gave Malik Yoba his chance to shine…he needed it. Plus, the show had a killer soundtrack. A black cop and Purto-Rican cop made the ultimate duo and it brings back memories of me as a budding teen. It wasn’t too violent for me not to see but it was drmatic enough to keep my attention. Please reboot it. Other than that, what about that duo female cop show: Rizzoli and Isles or something…that looks interesting. If it appears on netflix, I’m all in. Perhaps I’ll demand it. lol. Silk Stocking! that another crime drama probably before most of ya’ll whippersnappers. ANd could Monk be a duo. Even though Monk was the lead guy, you gotta consider his trusty assistant always handy with a wet nap. LOL. She solved some cases too. And good call on Car 54. :-)

Nice! Monk actually slipped my mind! Yes, he and Sharona were quite a pair. I also liked him with Natalie. New York Undercover was a damn good show, and did help launch Malik Yoba’s career. This is true. I remember my folks watching it on Fox back in the day. That was a great show full of diversity. We need more programs like that on the airwaves.

Silk Stocking!!!! i loved that show, but Mulder and Scully take the price in this one (or FBI doesn´t count???)

May 30, 2012 at 11:15 PM

Hmmm… well, I guess I’ll take the characters from The X-Files. I shouldn’t, but I’ll work with that! :-)

PSYCH ALL THE WAY BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHAWN AND GUS ARE THE BEST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May 29, 2012 at 12:17 PM

I still think Shawn and Gus are one of the best duos out there.

May 29, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Jacque, you and I are of the same opinion.

Miami Vice was a very good cop duo show and both actors were good on the eyes. Phillip Michael Thomas (Rico) and Don Johnson (Sonny) were both cool cops and the ladies loved them, especially Don Johnson. The show was not too violent and it captured the audience attention.

For the female duo cop show it would be Rizzoli and Isles. Although Isles is not really a cop she acts like one. This show has everything to keep the audience wanting more. The new season premiers on June 5th and I can’t wait to see what is instored for the viewers.

Keep up the excellent job you are doing Jay. I look forward to reading your next clacking in color!!!

You know, I’ve never even seen an episode of Rizzoli & Isles. Both actresses are very pretty…especially Angie Harmon. I’m going to have check the show out, but yes, I’m sure they’re a solid buddy cop duo as well!

May 29, 2012 at 4:03 PM

I’ve never watched Common Law, but if you say it’s good then I’ll have to give it a try…besides, you like Psych and so do I, therefore, you have good taste. I trust ya.

P.S.
I wish they would bring back New York Undercover…I saw someone else post about it. It was a good combination of sexy and truth in the storyline

. . . . .

In the spirit of Clacking In Color, I’m going with a toss-up of Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher) / Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor) and Meldrick Lewis (Clark Johnson) / John Munch (Richard Belzer) from Homicide: Life On The Street, damned fine detectives all around …

May 29, 2012 at 10:23 PM

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that show, Michael. However, I am quite familiar with Andre Braugher and Richard Belzer — two great actors. I’m sure if they were in the program then it must have been pretty good. I’m going to google this! Thanks, Michael! :-)

<——– *faints at Jaylen’s revelation*

Mike, you and I are what they call ‘old school.’ But, for those who don’t know, I believe they carried the Munch character over to SVU.

Side Note: Munch and Ice-T another great partnership ;)

I’m still disappointed The Good Guys didn’t get renewed. Police that ‘stache!

I was a huge fan of Cagney and Lacey as a kid and really enjoyed their friendship immensely. They had each other’s backs on the job, and were also there for each other when the going got rough at home, and they each had their fair share of issues in their houses. They fought a lot too but always managed to make up in the end. It was gritty and realistic.

May 30, 2012 at 10:40 AM

I never saw an episode of Cagney and Lacey, but I have fantastic things about it. Did you catch their mini reunion on USA’s Burn Notice? I think it may have been last season…or the season before that. It was a funny episode.
