Alan Partridge is a funny movie, even if it ends up mostly pointless

alan partridge

‘Alan Partridge’ is a funny movie, but the comedy may be too dry and odd for those unfamiliar with British humour.

As people get older, they struggle with the ever increasing feeling of wondering if they still matter. Technology doesn’t help matters, with new ways overwhelming the old ways all the time, from blue collar manufacturing work to old school newspaper journalism. Sometimes these changes lead to greater improvements for society as a whole, even if they cause problems with a workforce not used to the new order of things. But there is also the corporate, insidious side of things, concerned with the lowest common denominator and jumping on the latest fad.

Of course, this sort of subject has been covered in movies from Network to Wayne’s World, and countless other examples in other forms of media. By this point, it’s hardly a new worry, although people certainly still worry about it. The Internet and YouTube have made it easier for people to become famous with very little talent and no training, although often the more talented and charismatic ones tend to eventually do better than the rest. Usually, anyway. But as the talent pool of unpaid labor grows and more distractions are available to the public, sacrifices will be made in the old media guard, because there’s only so much money and energy to go around. And only so many hours in the day.

Transcendence is a dumb movie about smart people

TRANSCENDENCE

‘Transcendence’ wants to be a smart, thrilling, what-if sci-fi flick, but like an overworked hard drive, the whole thing just ends up crashing.

We’ve all seen movies featuring sentient computers: 2001: A Space Odyssey, WarGames, Eagle Eye, Demon Seed, Colossus: The Forbin Project, TRON, and of course the Terminator movies. And we all know how badly things usually go once the computers become more intelligent and “alive” than their human counterparts. But what would happen if a human’s intelligence and essence were to be uploaded into a super computer?

That’s the question posed by the new sci-fi thriller Transcendence. Johnny Depp stars as a computer genius who has helped develop a supercomputer known as PINN, a creation that is as “alive” as a machine can be. But a fringe group of techno-terrorists believe that PINN and other pieces of technology like it threaten our very being on the planet (kind of like The Terminator‘s SkyNet), so they bomb several computer labs and attempt to assassinate Depp’s Dr. Caster. He doesn’t die from the shooting, but it turns out the bullet was laced with radioactive material that was detected too late to save him, so his wife decides to take the PINN project one step further and upload her husband onto the hard drives. What could possibly go wrong?

Beyond the Wall: Who is the most evil in the land?

The Lion and the Rose Jack Gleeson and Natalie Dormer Game of Thrones

‘Game of Thrones’ has been lucky to have an antagonist as reviled as Joffrey Baratheon. But considering the events surrounding the Red Wedding, perhaps someone else is the most evil person in Westeros. Non-book readers, remember this post is dark and full of spoilers.

The word “gamechanger” is thrown around a little too often these days. Game of Thrones, though, is a show that establishes its right to use it time and time again. “The Lion and the Rose” was just the next in a lineage of episodes that includes “Baelor,” “Blackwater” and “The Rains of Castamere” … and we are only two episodes into this season!

If you aren’t a fan of the hairstyles of the highborn ladies of Westeros, then this post isn’t for you.
Joffrey Baratheon has long been this show’s biggest antagonist. In recent seasons though, there have been a couple of contenders to that crown. Have the recent actions of people like Walder Frey, Roose Bolton, Balon Greyjoy and Tywin Lannister himself changed that dynamic? Considering the lay of the land after this week’s events, who is the most evil in all of Westeros?

But before we get into that, our regular SPOILER WARNING. Beyond the Wall is a column that is written for book-readers by book-readers. So if you aren’t a fan of the hairstyles of the highborn ladies of Westeros, then this post isn’t for you. Continue reading 'Beyond the Wall: Who is the most evil in the land?' »

Philomena, Walter Mitty, The Nut Job and more come to home video

Philomena-1

Movies on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital April 15 include ‘Philomena,’ ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,’ ‘The Nut Job,’ ‘Ride Along,’ ‘Black Nativity,’ ‘Interior. Leather Bar.’, ‘Great Expectations,’ ‘Mallrats,’ ‘Reality Bites,’ ‘Uncle Buck,’ ‘Touch of Evil,’ ‘Double Indemnity,’ and more!

We’ve got some great movies to tell you about this week which are coming to home video. Leading off the group is Philomena, the film that probably would have won Judi Dench another Oscar if it hadn’t been for Cate Blanchett’s extraordinary performance in Blue Jasmine. Ben Stiller’s reimagining of the classic The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was expected to be a big deal over the holidays, but it seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Our Kim Tibbs enjoyed it, however. Kim also enjoyed the casting of The Nut Job, but thought the movie may have been overly complicated for the kiddies. We kept Kim busy in January with reviews, and she checked out another of this week’s video releases, Ride Along, as well. Classic movie fans should be very excited for the Blu-ray releases of Double Indemnity and Touch of Evil, and the modern day classic Reality Bites. These titles are more will be available April 15. Check out the week’s highlights in our shopper’s guide after the jump, and click on a link to get more information or to make a purchase.
