Cupid’s sparrows and giant nets: love The Office way

Phyllis Smith of "The Office"It isn’t Valentine’s Day, but in light of the fact that The Office is filmed documentary style, I can forgive them being late on a holiday. In fact, you’d almost expect it. What an amazing episode, and with so very little happening. Pam and Jim went off with Phyllis and Bob for a couples extended lunch, while everybody else in the office stayed for a “Lonely Hearts” party. I never realized that everyone was now single save our favorite couple.

And I find myself torn on whether I like single Michael better or involved Michael. Michael and Jan was a train wreck, but it made for some classic moments. Michael and Holly were so perfect together it was wonderful to see, but then Michael is at his most awkward best when things aren’t going well for him. In this episode, though, Michael got to grow a little and that doesn’t happen too often.

I think it was appropriate that Michael’s blood bank buddy didn’t show up at his staged party. We got some very nice moments with most of the rest of the gang tonight, including a possible connection for Kevin, but it was much more realistic for Michael’s girl to be a no-show. The writers can have him linger on this with the glove for a bit if they want to, but it’s more than likely setting him up for Holly’s inevitable return in the season finale.

Establish Michael as someone who’s “starting” to move on and then drop her right back into his life and see him collapse into an emotional train wreck right before our very eyes. That’s pure Office magic right there. And we’ve got plenty of episodes to start that train rolling. Do you think blood-bank-missing-glove girl will show up?

  • I thought Stanley was married. If not, how can it be that no one in the office is married. What are the odds of that?
  • Brilliant explanation for Andy’s absence this episode; he’s off on one of the various honeymoons he booked that were nonrefundable. Definitely one of the best explanations for an absent cast member I can recall.
  • I don’t know if I could eat after overhearing Bob and Phyllis in the handicapped stall doing it either.
  • I want to know more about the other pair of guys who dueled over Angela.
  • Kevin’s actually cute when he’s fumbling around “pretty” girls.
