Tracy Morgan is back! Not that he ever really left the building, as he just moved to a different floor to star in 30 Rock, but he’s back on SNL. Going into this episode, I was curious about how Morgan would do, because, frankly, he was never really that prominent when he was a cast member.
Morgan did an adequate job, even if he spent most of the time blatantly reading cue cards. I thought it was kind of charming, like when Christopher Walken does it. I thought the material in this episode was pretty good. There was a great digital short, a good Weekend Update, live animals on live TV, a Tina Fey sighting, lots of Tracy Morgan in drag, and most importantly: there were no poop jokes! Only a few of the sketches fell flat for me.
Cold Open: Tracy Morgan is crazy. Tracy Morgan punches people in the face. Hilarity ensues. Seriously, is anyone else morbidly curious about what Tracy Morgan is like in real life? Is he just as crazy as he seems, or is the character he plays (all the time) just that brilliant?
Monologue: I thought Tracy did a good job with the monologue. There were definitely a few laughs in there, particularly when he called Lorne Michaels a bitch and made him fetch him a soda. That was always one of my favorite bits when Tracy was a cast member.
Brian Fellow’s Safari Planet: Alright, I admit that I’ve always had a soft spot for Brian Fellow’s Safari Planet. Going into the episode it was the one skit I was hoping to see. Honestly, I’m not sure why.
The View: It wouldn’t be SNL with Tracy Morgan unless he was in drag. The great part was that he was playing Sherri Shepherd, who plays his character’s wife on 30 Rock. I wonder how this skit is going to play with Shepherd. Also, I love Wiig’s Hasselbeck impression.
Scared Straight: I think the wig people on this show deserve an Emmy. More often than should be the case, the wigs and glued on facial hair are the funniest thing about a sketch. This wasn’t a bad sketch, and it always helps when a bunch of the cast members lose their cool, but we had seen it before. I’m not sure it warrants a recurring status.
Dateline NBC: Another recurring sketch, but this time it’s one that I really enjoy. Bill Hader’s creepy investigative journalist is really funny.
Astronaut Jones: Um… okay.
Musical Guest: Kelly Clarkson: Behold the power of American Idol!
Weekend Update: Let’s face it, John Malkovich is comedy gold, whether it’s the real thing, or just Bill Hader doing a great impression. Even the costume was spot on. I loved the quick “Really?!?” with Tracy Morgan, with Tracy clearly not understanding the purpose of the bit. The Barbie bit fell a bit flat for me, though, and seemed to drag on a little too long.
Big Love: Tracy Morgan in drag: it’s always good for a laugh. The opening credits was perfect too.
Digital Short: A pretty funny and clever digital short! I was impressed.
Suppressex: Not bad. Tracy Morgan did a good job being creepy, getting turned on by some of the most bizarre things.
High IQ: Ok, this was a bit of a stinker, but at least they really went for it, with just about every crazy costume they could think of, including a floating Neo.
Family Flix: I think I’m a heartless bastard, because I thought this skit was pretty funny.
I have to winder if Tracy Morgan is even in on the joke or if he just reads the cards and is naturally funny. Either way. He always delivers.

I have to winder if Tracy Morgan is even in on the joke or if he just reads the cards and is naturally funny. Either way. He always delivers.
