Psych – In which we see another part of Jules’ past

This week's episode of Psych featured lots of Jules, verbal problems for Shawn, and no pineapple.

- Season 4, Episode 12 - "A Very Juliet Episode"

Despite the minor whine this was an enjoyable installment of the series. Out of the quartet of characters that take up most of the camera time, Jules is the one I’d like to know more about, and not because she’s cute as a button. Where Lassiter is a stereotypical, hard-assed detective, Shawn is showman and Gus is, well, Gus, Jules is the most natural. So, it was nice to see her in a more romantic mode. Yes, the rendezvous was stereotypical; nevertheless,  it was still sad to see Jules sitting alone in an empty train station, then elated when she saw her old boyfriend again.

Also interesting to see was Shawn “Foot in Mouth” Spencer. I don’t know why, but I find episodes where Shawn can’t step out of his own way more entertaining than when he’s just charming the pants off of everyone. It makes him more human, despite his abilities. Question is, why did he take on this investigation from Gus? Was he just trying to impress Jules (with much help from Henry) or was he again trying to show that he’s the greatest detective this side of Patrick Jane. After all these episodes it still seems that Shawn is doing a lot of this more to impress others than to help honest citizens.

Some other moments from this week’s episode:

  • In a unprecedented move, the cold open flashback was not of young Shawn and Gus, but of slightly younger Jules and her boyfriend. The ending sequence was also free of Shawn and Gus, making this a true Jules-centric episode.
  • Another reference to The Mentalist. This time a direct reference to actor Simon Baker. These two shows should really team up for a crossover. It would be a hoot.
  • In another unprecedented moment, Shawn introduces Gus with his real name. This would normally be okay, except it was told to a convicted felon who was allegedly trying to kill their client.
  • Chief Vick was back this week. You would think Kristen Nelson would be in the show more frequently being that she’s in the opening credits and all.
  • We learned something new and possibly disturbing about Lassie…he’s a lover of Grease. We also saw the two personalities that make up Carlton Lassiter: the side that thinks romance should be shot and left in the alley to die, and the side that is actually compassionate and gives good advice. I like both sides.
  • For those trying to figure out who was playing Agent Wayne, it was Craig Sheffer. Also known as Keith Scott from One Tree Hill.
  • Finally, no pineapple sighting this week. And, according to other sites, there was no pineapple featured in the episode. This may be the truth since it wasn’t mentioned in the Psych Twitter feed.

Next week on Psych: Judd Nelson with a cheesy mustache.
