Psych – So many quotes, so little time

The quotes and pop references were fast and furious on this week's installment of 'Psych.'

- Season 4, Episode 13 - "Death is in the Air"

“How did I get lice anyway?” Young Shawn

You come in contact with anything out of the ordinary lately?” — Youngish Henry

” No. Unless you count that squirrel with the foaming mouth I’ve been playing with.” — Young Shawn

*************

“It’s not your fault.” Shawn to Client

“Oh good. How do you know?” Client

“I don’t. But when people say that it movies, things seem to get fixed almost magically.” — Shawn

*************

“The Thornburg virus… What does this have to do with Richard Chamberlain?” Shawn

*************

Let me get this straight… You hit the town, get sloppy drunk, pass out, woke up without a virus? Isn’t that usually the other way around?” Shawn to client of the week

*************

“The Thornburg Virus? I studied that in school. But, has there ever been a case in the U.S.?” Jules

No! There’s not enough black people!” Gus

*************

“He has an irrational fear of Patrick Dempsey.” — Gus, about Shawn

“It’s rational. Either of you watch Grey’s Anatomy? The man is completely terrifying!” Shawn

You’re just jealous of his hair.” — Jules

“Well, there’s that…” — Shawn

*************

“I’ll have a club soda with three pineapple wedges. And if you can get the Hippy Hippy Shake going, flip a few glasses, and introduce me to Elisabeth Shue, there’s an extra fiver in it for you.” — Shawn to barman at client’s hotel. BTW, that was one of the pineapple references.

*************

“Throughout history, there were only two Gingers who weren’t prostitutes…Ginger Rogers and Ginger from Gilligan’s Island. And I still have my suspicions about the latter. In fact, Gus, I’ve made my decision: she was a filthy, pirate hooker.” Shawn

*************

“I can’t believe this, Shawn! First we’re looking for a prostitute, now I’m naked in a parking lot!” Gus

Just like our prom night.” — Shawn

*************

“I still smell like stinky nuts, Shawn.” — Gus, after being trapped in a hazmat suit with Shawn’s corn nuts.

Gus, we don’t have four hours to riff on that.” Shawn

*************

I could care less about your secretions! However, I would love to get my craniometer around that giant Raisinet of yours. Or is it a Goober? Possibly a malt ball.” — Dr. Reitman (Judd Nelson) on measuring Gus’ giant head. Nelson was funny as the creepy, yet entertaining, doctor.

This week’s pop culture references

Blame it on RioA 1984 romantic comedy starring Michael Caine, Valerie Harper and Demi Moore.

Mr. Dobalina… Mr. Bob Dobalina — One of the earliest references to this was in The Monkees’ “Zilch” from their Headquarters album. I know there have been later references to Bob Dobalina since then.

The Thorn Birds – Classic mini-series that aired on ABC in 1983. It starred Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, Christopher Plummer and Jean Simmons.

Iron Eagle 2 and Iron Eagle 4 Part of the Iron Eagle film series starring Louis Gossett Jr. as Colonel Chappy Sinclair.

Rump Shaker” — the name of the song Shawn now uses for his ringtone. It was released in 1992 by the hip-hop group Wreckx-N-Effect.

Cumbersome Stay Puft Protective Suit — Mentioned by Shawn, who didn’t know the real name of a Hazmat suit. Of course, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man was one of the baddies fought in the original Ghostbusters.

Outbreak1995 action/suspense film about a deadly viral outbreak in a small American town. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and the man below…

Patrick Dempsey — Now known for his long running role as Dr. Derek Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy.

Cocktail – An indirect reference about the 1988 film that starred Tom Cruise.

The Taking of Beverly Hills – A 1991 film starring Ken Wahl and Matt Fewer.

That’s it! Talk to you next week.

Psych was great once again (nice to see Bob from ReGenesis getting some work in another lab)

Also… what’s with the ridiculously short page 1s (and long page 2s) and the new ugly design? The old one was smart and clear this is just a backwards step. Did someone turn on the blur filter for the fonts in the images?

You know… Mr. Dobalina wants to quit…

I really wonder how many people under 30 can really enjoy Psych. Then again I think they are just putting one reference after another without any real “beats” in between… I mean it’s all so fast and especially the “squirrel with foam around his mouth” – I mean Arnie doesn’t even react to Shawn saying that…

Anyway, I liked this episode, don’t ask me why…

Disclaimer: I know his name is not Artie on the show. It’s a reference. And I know it’s not “wants to quit” – I was in 8th grade when the song came out and I am german, that’s why I wrote it that way :-)

“Who are you, Michael Vick?” That’s all I needed to enjoy.

As for the other pop references, I find that most of them are lost on even early 30 somethings. Culturally, Shawn and Gus are older than they actually are. Must come from watching reruns as children. Yes, I’m actually pondering how two young guys get all the references that are in the script. Sheesh.
