I was at The Event.
Well … I mean … I wasn’t at The Event.
Rather, I was at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for The Event. (And I will do my very best to contain my excitement at the fact I was within touching distance of Laura Innes. I make no promises, however …)
What is The Event? Well … I’ve’n’t a clue zactly. Something strange and probably “not of this earth”. We’ll find out down the line. The pilot episode they showed us at Comic-Con doesn’t lend any answers as to what it is. (Could it possibly be the sucking wake caused by the departure of ABC’s Stephen McPherson … ?!?)
And that’s the kind of show we’re dealing with here. One that leads us by the hand and engrosses us immediately within it. It coaxes us to watch in all its mystery-shrouded goodness … in its fast-paced story lines … in its intertwining, overlapping come hitherness to give us a terrific opening episode which The Powers That Be at The Event are certain we’ll want to come back for more.
And you will. You’ll want to see what all the mystery is about. Oh, be assured they’re not going to tell us what The Event is right away. They’re going to string us along, deepening our curiosities. And that’s all right. We’ll play along.
Keith wrote about The Event a few months ago and — while there are elements of FlashForward and V within it — I have to state I feel more of a Lost vibe in the premiere more than those other two series.
Regarding mucking up episode after episode with too much filler: I’m certain the executive producers will know how to craft the show so they don’t fall into those Lost episode territories. You know the terrain I’m talking about; where story arcs get so convoluted they end up leading nowhere, alienating the audience. I want to believe those head honchos (who have the likes of 24 and The 4400 and Eureka under their belts) know better than to get caught up in the pitfalls of episodic mire. Of course, future episodes of the program will be the tale of the tape. But from the get-go, this show looks to be one huge promising highlight in the glut of new shows which will make their way onto our television screens.
The pilot was terrific. The acting is top notch and engaging. The premise of the show? Mysterious and attractive. (And besides — it has Laura Innes. *swoon*)
I’ll be there come September 20th for the season premiere … despite the fact I’ve seen it already.
Join me and see what all the fuss is about …
Yeah… I’m out. No more “Lost” for me.

Regardless of the convolution of the show, I was all over Lost, Sebastian.
This could possibly be “Part 2″ . . . . .
Good for you. Here’s a hint: the answer is “god”, and most likely it will have to suffice for every technical question on the show too. Because once you are in la-la-land (e.g. “Purgatory” and “The afterworld”) technology doesn’t matter.
I don’t have enough teeth left to grind to stand another show where you have to fly towards an island in a certain angle to get to it and in the end it’s pre-hell. Or pre-heaven.
Why can’t children be born there and suddenly they can? Why do you have to press a button? Why are there energy-pockets in purgatory?
Because of GOD!
Isn’t that NICE?!?
It’s movies for me from now on. I’m not willing to invest another minute into fantasy/Sci-Fi on TV other than SG:U.
Sounds like it could be “The Event” of the year…
Thanks for sharing your review…

I don’t know, Abimbola. But I’m willing to find out. The pilot I saw at Comic-Con worked for me.
Bring it on . . . . .
I sure hate it for my German friend. This show looks good, and I could give a happy darn what is actually behind the Event, which, to my great disappointment, wasn’t shown, or even mentioned more than once, in the pilot.
And Mike is right. Laura Innes is the most underrated, underused actress in Hollywood. And she’s purty too.

Yup. With you there, Ivey. But that’s going to be half the fun … delving into what “The Event” is.
Sebastian: It’s not God. It’s not. God has other things, other more important things, to be doing. He doesn’t have time for this show. Mark my words.
Just a prediction, but you’re going to be one of those “wish I woulda’s” I mentioned above in the bi-line.
Mark my words.
*psssssssssssst* Yeah … that Laura Innes … she shore iz purty …
Ok I’m taking your word for it and tune in because I too love Laura Innes and seeing that cast photo I got instant “ER” withdrawal symptoms.
But mark my words if the answer is “god” I’ll buy a ticket, fly over there (I had a trip planned in ’08 I never took, flying to SF and driving up to Vancouver and back – and I think it’s Seattle where I can find you, right?) and kick you in the nuts.
Damn you. Now I’m cautiously optimistic. You evil player of mind tricks. Shame on you!
I’m with you guys in wanting to give this show a chance. I know they’re not going to make the same mistakes as LOST because they’ve got that to use as a guide. This will be a completely different central mystery.
Michael, I think I can say with a fair amount of certainty that your nuts are safe.
To my knowledge, there is slim pickings for me next fall (The bright spot being SGU). That’s why I’ll give this a chance. I recall someone perhaps Bob(?) wrote an article about this being the golden age of tv – I just read the headline, shook my head in disgust that I’m not experiencing a golden age, then pulled out an SG1 dvd for the treadmill.
Well, I was including the past 10-ish years in that article.

Two words, bsgfan2003: Bob’s Burgers.
Yes … I know. It’s beyond the fall season. But you’ll survive …
All out stupid internet emotes for that statement because I feel the same way at the moment. The golden age of TV was back when DS9 was still on and Buffy and Angel and Firefly and *yuck* Voyager and then Enterprise followed *shakes fist at Rick Berman*
So all out *hug* emotes for you BSG so you know that you are not alone ;-)
Wow. What a great I’m having!
bsgfan, if you’re a fan of SGU (which I know you are) and a fan of Caprica, then if you haven’t seen it here’s a link to a preview trailer of both shows. The first half is dedicated to SGU and makes it look bad-ass. I can’t wait for September!

That was sublime. Thanks for thinking of me!
BSG, I knew that any SGU fan just *had* to see that. It gave me goosebumps for the new season. I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
I’m sorry – I don’t get the swooning over Laura Innes. But, lucky her, she has some great fans in you guys.
I’m really fighting watching The Event. Every time there is a serial program, it fights for ratings and then is cancelled. It will no doubt have a huge production value, advertisers will not be willing to pay huge prices for a small, non-18-49 audience share and six months in those of us invested will be all in a panic because it’s on the table awaiting the ax. Then they’ll throw some other show in its time slot, give it a huge hiatus and bring it back on a new night where it gets lost in the tide of shows to which everyone has already pledged their nightly viewing.
Now, if we were talking about CSI or NCIS, none of that would matter. We could tune in or miss an episode and it will not matter. But the faithful 25000 households that supposedly represent the rest of us (in what can only be the most poorly chosen statistical group of all time) will be all a twitter to tell everyone how great those mindless shows really are. Unless The Event moves to cable, and it will stand a chance.
So, I think The Event will be in viewing it. That’s the catch. If the chosen ones fall into the trap of watching The Event, then that will be an Event.
Yes, I’m hatin on the Nielsen households who seem to have been put on this earth strictly to ruin my choice of entertainment.
She’s pretty, don’t get me wrong, but when it comes to Innes, it is all about the talent.

Agrees. Whole-heartedly.
The fact she’s a redhead is just a bonus.
And … if you bring your dog along, we’ll give him a bonus, too. (Love quoting Groucho …)
I think I’ve just always seen her in relatively bitchy roles, and they seem easy to me. LOL
Me neither, Mod — she’s funny-looking. There. I said it.

Well, Debbie. I guess I like funny-looking women. Actually, I like a lot of different types of women and probably find about half of all the women I see attractive in one way or another. I guess I’m just guilty of “likin’ dem girls!”
As my old boyfriend said, she has face like a smacked ass. To me, she tends to act miserable.
I hear ya! I feel exactly the same way and you know about a zillion other people think the Nielsens are a ridiculous way to determine ratings. I’ve also been confused over this “magic” 18-49 demo all the networks seem to covet. I am now just out of that range and at my age the kids are older and we have more disposable income. I was married at the age of 22 and from then until almost 49 we had very little money to spend on all the crap they advertise. Now we are treating ourselves to nice vacations, some great new EVO 4G phones, eating out at places that don’t have drive-through windows, et cetera. One would think the over 49 demo would be the most lucrative.

*hides behind Tom and glares at Sebastian*
LOL, I didn’t mean safe at the risk of my own! Oh well, I’d say I’ll “take one on the chin” for you Michael, but I think we’re talking a few feet lower.
