Project Runway – My Fair Lady, Gone with the Wind and the Little Mermaid

The show started with 8 designers and one was auf'd, now 7 remain. This episode was at times worse than a playground of third graders, but at least some of these players can design and sew.

- Season 8, Episode 9 - "Race to the Finish"

This season of Project Runway has at times been more annoying than enjoyable, yet I still watch each week. So, maybe the annoying, childish name-calling and bickering are more enjoyable than I like to admit. The Gretchen-Michael rivalry flared up again this week. Gretchen really needs to give it up. So what if he likes the same color palette? That doesn’t mean he is copying you. Michael made a ball gown with a huge train and Gretchen made a hippie peasant dress. Hmm … which looked more “high fashion”? Well, I guess it is a good thing I am not a fashion expert, because the ball gown was in the bottom and the hippie peasant dress with feathers was in the top.

The challenge this week was to create a high fashion runway look inspired by L’oreal eyeshadow. I didn’t like the over-the-top product placement by L’oreal, but I did like the addition of a second ready-to-wear companion piece. I was surprised more of the designers didn’t see that coming and plan accordingly.

Top 3: Andy, Mondo, and Gretchen

Middle 2: April and Christopher

Bottom 3: Ivy, Valerie and Michael

While I hated Gretchen’s look and don’t get the judges’ love for it, I agreed with the winner and the designer auf’d. It was time for Ivy to go. She lucked out enough times sliding by and while Valerie’s designs weren’t very good either, Ivy’s were worse. Mondo was the right choice for a winner too. He really has progressed this season and has designed innovative, creative and well-made outfits. I would love to have Mondo’s ready-to-wear look. That was gorgeous!

I’m not sure what to make of Valerie’s breakdown. I must have missed something, because it wasn’t clear to me why she had to remake her outfit. And, I was really afraid at the end she was going to give up her spot to Ivy. I was relieved to see that didn’t happen and that Valerie was in the previews for next week.

What did you think? What outfits were your favorite? Do you think Ivy should have gone home?

I seriously don’t understand the judges because they’re always choosing some of the worst things for the top three and sometimes even the winner. I’m a Mondo fan so I’m glad he’s winning challenges now. But the love for Gretchen is puzzling. She was already told last week by Michael Kors to get over that bordeaux color but she used it again. Her high fashion piece this week was awful! Seriously, Carol Burnett could have worn that as Nora Desmond. All that was missing was the turban.

Agree. As soon as her dress came down around the corner on stage, I thought she was in the bottom again. I was shocked she was on top. It was not good, not a good fit and not attractive. Only thing I can guess is that in person the fabric looked better, including the feathers. She started off so promising, but the last few weeks she has just been awful. Plus, her dismissive and catty behavior annoys me.
