Saturday Night Live – Paul Rudd / Paul McCartney

Passing chewed gum, food for foodie cats, a tiny harmonica solo, and 'A Day in the Life.' It's another episode of 'SNL,' and we'll have clips from it embedded here as soon as we get 'em.

- Season 36, Episode 9 - "Paul Rudd / Paul McCartney"

Cold Open: Obama speaks — Man, they had nothing else to go on tonight? What about Miley Cyrus sucking on a bong? Something else?

Monologue: Paul Rudd — I was rather disappointed with this monologue. The Paul jokes seemed like a kid could make them up.

Feline Culinary Creations — Oh don’t laugh — I’m sure there are crazy kitty people out there who are Googling for this crap right now, hoping it’s real!

Vogelcheck Christmas — Paul Rudd reprises his role from last time as one of the Vogelchecks. They started the harsh kissing early on, which made me wonder where the hell they were going to go to shock us more. Then … what the hell was with the mom grabbing at stranger Santa’s balls for a jingle? That was just odd. I’m not sure what was more uncomfortably funny: The final kiss or the four-way gum exchange.

What’s That Name? — Holy crap, I would totally fail at this game. My name recollection skills are in serious need of honing. An OK skit that got pretty funny when … what’s-his-name came back again, and what’s-his-name forgot it … again.

Stublin’ — And here’re your lyrics:

Sumble out of bed
And I stumble to the kitchen
Stumble in the bathroom
Stumble to the living room
Stumble out the door and past my car (Stumblin’!)

Stumble into work
I stumble through the office
Stumble into gym
And I stumble through my workout
Stumble down the street into a bar (Stumblin’!)

Stumble through the bar
That has Mario Betali
Stumble through a world-
record ping ping tennis rally
Stumble right in step
With my good old friend
It seems this stumble’s never gonna end (Stumblin!)

Stumble past a guy
Putting on his first lipstick
Stumble past a girl
With a big bowl of Bisquick
Stumble past three different kinds of bears

Stumble past the elevator
Stumble past the elevator
Stumble past the elevator
Stumble past the elevator
Stumble down a nasty flight of stairs

Walking in slow motion
Walking in slow motion
Walking in slow motion, Mmmmm

Walking in slow motion
Walking in slow motion
Walking in slow motion

(Tiny harmonica solo!)

Stumble through a plot
With a hobo acting regal
Past a bunch of mimes
And a painter with an easel
And a one man band
Playing checkers with his dentures

Thus concludes our stumblin’ adventure

Julian Assange Interrupts — Hell this should have been the cold open. In fact, I’d bet it was considered before they realized they didn’t have enough material for tonight.

Sexually Speaking — I think Dr. Linda Marie Choice has been out from the show so often with issues that she needs a different kind of doctor herself! If not that, get Roger a freakin’ hearing aid. Funny skit that doesn’t exactly get old but might need something else after this many reoccurrences.

Musical Guest: Paul McCartney — Nice to hear something most of us have heard before! I was getting worried at first that we’d hear a bunch of new stuff he was trying to promote that, well, nobody wants to really hear. However, it was quite clear with FOUR musical numbers that there was a serious lack of material for this episode. Thing is, McCartney’s portion was the best part of the episode, as far as I’m concerned.

Weekend Update — Damn if I don’t find the Stefan skit hysterical every time, and it’s mostly because Hader cracks up through most of it. Nothing wrong with that when it makes sense he’s laughing.

Holiday Jam — My guess is Jay Pharoah’s principal thing is part of his stand-up routine, maybe bringing up a principal he had when he was in high school. The skit was OK for a chuckle, but not overly hilarious.

Meryl Streep on Ice — I’m guessing this whole thing was to poke fun at how Streep blows off the fact that she gets Oscars, as though she doesn’t get why she receives them. In a way this could sort of work as a recurring skit, not something that they’d have to pre-record every time.

Angry Spotlight Guy — I didn’t really get this skit so much, but I always love an angry Sudeikis character.

I agree, I thought for sure there would be Miley sucking on a bong at some point. I actually thought the open was funny once it got into the Stockholm Syndrome part of it. What’s the Name? was my favorite skit of the night, although I did enjoy Meryl Streep on Ice. I’ve seen Meryl in enough interviews where she comes off as so self-deprecating that you don’t know if she’s for real or if it’s all an act at this point. I do wish Sir Paul had finished A Day in the Life though. I love that song.

And I wish that cat food was real. I’m pretty much a chef for my cat who can’t seem to tolerate any kind of commercially produced food, so that stuff would be great for me, and him!

I kind of felt sorry for Paul Rudd. He was totally upstaged by McCartney and got very little to do. Its sort of surprising considering how hilarious he can be in films.

Still if you have to have the musical guest upstage the host, it might as well be one of the Beatles. I enjoyed all of the musical performances for the 1st time in a while. I just wish he sang more of So this is Christmas besides the give peace a chance segment. Also NBC shouldn’t of cut the last song and just let the show run over. No one cares about Showtime at the Apollo or whatever comes on after and just give us Paul McCartney for the two minutes the DVR goes past the scheduled endtime for shows.

I realize i’m a little late, but i think it’s worth mentioning that Sir Paul was actually pushing “new material,” in that he had just re-released “Band on the Run” in November.

Thank you for the well organized clips so that I could enjoy his excellence another time.
