The 2011 People’s Choice Awards – Predictable apathy

It's that time of year again ... when the award shows launch the year and awkward speeches and sequined gowns flow liberally across our television screens. Did you watch this hot mess?

There was all kinds of monkey business at the 2011 edition of The People’s Choice Awards this year.

From Conan O’Brien’s speech post Favorite Talk Show Host win to Jennifer Aniston’s halting, awkward address. And, for me, the bouncy-ness and frantic energy of hostess Queen Latifa — especially during the opening number — were just plain goofy.

Of course, the predictable stuff was present, too: The four awards the glittery Twilight saga snagged courtesy of the overwhelming bubblegum contingent who voted for them without restraint. Hugh Laurie of House winning for the umpteenth time as Favorite TV Actor. Even Glee coming in as Favorite TV Comedy wasn’t that much of a surprise.

There are many out there on the “show up and you’ll get an award” bandwagon for this particular ceremony, but there’s plenty of weird stuff on these telecasts that’s just plain, well … weird. How about Demi Lovato as Favorite TV Guest Star for her stint on Grey’s Anatomy over the likes of Neil Patrick Harris on Glee or Betty White on Community? Kristen Stewart over Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston (gag) or Angelina Jolie for Favorite Movie Actress?  And, seriously: Lie To Me taking Favorite TV Crime Drama over NCIS or Bones? Strange stuff, indeed.

While many of us didn’t give too much of a rip about the show, a few of us did chime in:

An Nicholson:  “On best new show, Hawaii 5-0 was a no-brainer to win. While it gives my feud fuel to prove its awesomeness — even if it didn’t have Castle as an adversary, I think Nikita was the better show. I just wish the CW had the same marketing budget to reach a wider demographic. Unfortunately, a show featuring adult leads while existing on the CW teen ghetto probably didn’t do it any favors on either side.”

D.W. West:  “Not that I’m a fan of The People’s Choice Awards as a rule, I was excited to see Neil Patrick Harris get recognized. I’ve been a massive fan of How I Met Your Mother from day one, I remember how close it came to getting canceled. That being said, he was robbed in the Guest Star category. I wasn’t impressed with Demi Lovato’s turn on Grey’s …”

Tara ShrodesHell’s Kitchen lover — was upset about the Favorite TV Chef category: “Gordon Ramsay was robbed. I am now on a hunger strike in protest. At least until I get hungry, that is.”

My (not so jaw-dropping) jaw-dropping moment came when Bleep My Dad Says won Favorite New TV Comedy. Critics have lambasted this show left and right and, while it’s not the best thing to come out of Hollywood, it really didn’t deserve to walk away with the award, either.

Thankfully, however, all is right with the world as American Idol came in as Favorite Competition Show. We can all sleep better knowing that now, can’ t we?

Overall the whole show was a total stinko. The jokes were totally lame and when the Queen went down and talked to the Twilight group, you could tell they were really embarrassed by the whole thing. I agree some of the winners were a joke.

Mike cut my best part:

“I wasn’t impressed with Demi Lovato on Grey’s, even after someone told me who she was…”

Snark, snark…

. . . . .

Sorry, Mr. West. I shoulder the blame completely for that one.

Apology accepted.

However, I expect to see remunerations paid directly, in the form of 10 black specled notepads with “Grey’s Anatomy is better than American Idol” written 75 times on each page.

By the end of business, if you would please, Mr. Noble.

I admit, I only watched about 15 minutes of it, tuned in right before Taylor Swift came out for favorite male actor (Go Johnny Depp!!!) and tuned out after… um.. Zac Efron got favorite actor under 25. That was plenty for me.

. . . . .

Johnny Depp’s going somewhere … ?!?

. . . . .

When Sandra Oh can beef up her craft, Mr. West, I’ll be happy to oblige …

I DVR’d the whole thing and went through it in FF3 mode. I was only waiting for the Sci-Fi award which wasn’t even shown… guess I won’t be watching the award shows at all this year, all the same winners in all the same genres… yuck.

The Peoples Choice Awards should be taken as seriously as the MTV Movie Awards. All it is a reward for having a fan base psychotic enough to create over 20 profiles each to vote for you. That isn’t always a sign of award deserving quality. I mean how exactly can one consider Twilight to be in anyway the best of anything beyond it contains people who look good shirtless?
