Five things to get me to watch Sarah Michelle Gellar’s new CBS show

As exciting as it is that Sarah Michelle Gellar is coming back to our TV screens, it will take more than her past accomplishments (yes, I mean 'Buffy') to get me to watch.

Yep, you read that correctly — Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself is finally coming back to the small screen. Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s got the green light for a pilot called Ringer, a thriller where it sounds like she’ll be playing two roles as twin sisters running from the mob.

My immediate reaction was to squee deliciously, but I quickly came back down to earth. Is Gellar worth watching without Joss behind her? The reason I loved Buffy wasn’t for Buffy’s character alone; it was the ensemble and the writing and the mood and everything else that was clever and amazing about the show.

Then I started to squee again when I saw that it would be written by writers from Supernatural. The very best show on TV for me right now, and some of its writers will make Sarah Michelle Gellar a star again? Yes please.

I’ll definitely tune into the pilot, but I’ll only come back for more if it’s got the following things going for it:

Humor.
Part of what made Gellar’s Buffy so endearing wasn’t that she was kicking ass all of the time — it’s that she was kicking ass while firing the quips. I’ve got all the faith in the world that Supernatural writers can deliver the one-liners.

A strong supporting cast.
Surrounded by poorly developed characters and bad acting, even Gellar can’t keep me watching. When a show’s main character can be made better by the characters surrounding her, then that’s worth watching.

A believable mob.
If Gellar’s character is running from the mob, they’d better be believable and multi-dimensional. I won’t be long for any show with stereotypical mobsters in their black shirts and cuff links.

Action.
Gellar has proven that her on-screen ass-kicking is beloved by fans everywhere. If we get some boring character drama without any action — or worse, a helpless heroine — I won’t be tuning in.

Plot twists.
Please, let there be a million secrets, let Gellar’s character not be 100% sweet and innocent and let us be surprised at every turn … or almost every turn.

With the writing talent slated for this show, I can only have high hopes that Gellar will be given a role worthy of her and an enjoyable show for Buffy fans everywhere.

Right — The Wonderful Maladys. I hadn’t heard but we can assume it’s not happening since SMG has this new pilot and Nate Corrdry (sp?) is on Harry’s Law.

When you said running from a mob, I immediately thought of townspeople with pitchforks.

I think that means I need to get some well earned sleep, but “a multi-dimensional mob” made for a pretty funny image.

THE mob, not a mob — or perhaps The Mob would be better! ;-)
