Vampire Diaries – One more secret revealed

The more things change, the more they stay the same ... or at least that's what it feels like in this episode of 'The Vampire Diaries.' The only thing we learned is that the werewolves are a big bunch of losers.

- Season 2, Episode 14 - "Crying Wolf"

“If I did, who would ‘report’ her death?” – Damon to Alaric who tells him not to kill his reporter girlfriend

This was a really weird episode of The Vampire Diaries for me. It seems as though a ton of stuff happened, but when all was said and done, we’re really left in the same place as we started. We had some gratuitous violence (I’ve never seen so many still-beating bloody hearts in one hour), some creative torture to piggy-back on last week’s torture of Caroline and some sappy Elena / Stefan moments. But did we really get anything more?

Well, maybe.

I’m thinking a lot about the secret weapon room in the lakehouse and the places the writers could go with that. We know Jonathan Gilbert’s other journals are there, so that’s a hotbed of information to fuel the rest of the series, which could be great. But were Elena’s parents more than meets the eye? Were they demon hunters, part of the council, what? Or are we just being teased and it’s all Uncle Jon’s paraphernalia?

I guess we learned why Luca and Dr. Martin are Elijah’s bitches, though, and their reasons are no different from what motivates every other character on this show: they love their family and want to protect them. Can’t blame them for that, and now that Bonnie and friends know, hopefully they can join forces and help each other defeat Elijah and Klaus.

This and that:

  • Tyler redeemed himself and I can’t wait to see the Matt / Caroline reunion, but why the heck would Tyler leave with Jules? It makes no sense — what does he think she could possibly offer him after everything that just went down?
  • I guess Bonremy is official … and I’m glad. Bonnie has softened up and a good roll in the hay might make her stay pleasant. Hopefully this puts the nail in Luca’s coffin.
  • Clearly the wolves are not a threat, so what was the purpose of this storyline? A distraction from Elijah and his mission while they cast Klaus?
  • Alaric has such a way with words when talking with Jon: “You’re a dick.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. Then Jon goes and makes trouble by telling Jenna to ask Alaric about his dead wife’s body. Why? Why come back to try to make nice with your daughter by alienating everyone around her?
  • I’m confused. Is Elijah a man of his word or not? Yes, I get the loophole that allows him to still use Elena as a sacrifice, but how can he say he’s protecting her friends when he threatens Damon: “The moment you stop being of use to me, you’re dead. So do what I say. Keep elena safe.” Then he goes and saves Damon’s life three times … can’t quite figure the guy out.
