Saturday Night Live – Zach Galifianakis / Jessie J

Annie-Zach sings about pot, Noodles isn't dead, child assistants, and a missing Mr. T sketch. This 'SNL' held so much promise, yet it didn't really deliver. Check back here for videos of most of the sketches when we have 'em!

- Season 36, Episode 17 - "Zach Galifianakis / Jessie J"

Cold Open: Selection Sunday — You know me, I’m always up for a Cold Open that has little to do with politics. This one was great … even if it had maybe a smidgen of politics in there.

Monologue: Zach Galifianakis — A pretty funny monologue that held quite a bit of promise for the rest of the episode. The best laughs came from the signs Zach G. flipped through.

The Talk — I’m sure there are plenty of people who don’t care for Zach G.’s comedy, but for me he was the best part of this sketch by far.

The Original Kings of Catchphrase Comedy — None of these comedians are real, are they? In any case, I’m betting catchphrase comedians are as annoying to most other comedians as prop comics are. This was funny because it’s true, even if these guys weren’t real.

Scared Straight — How many times do these three guys need to be arrested before they’re finally, y’know, put in jail? I hope never, because this is one of the funnier recurring skits on the show.

Zach Looks for a New Assistant — Dammit all if these kids weren’t cute as hell in this short.

Musical Guest: Jessie J — Really good performances, especially the second one. Girl’s got some pipes!

Weekend Update — Once again there were fewer guests on the Update than usual. The sleepy Andy/Liam portion was weird as hell, but it was funny.

What Happened to Noodles? — I almost thought the asphyxiation bit was made up on the spot, due to Wiig cracking up at one point. As usual, it could have been funnier, and then it fell apart at the end with the botched voiceover. What a shame.

Celebrity Scoop — I love making fun of Canadians as much as the next American, but this one didn’t do it for me.

Corn Syrup Message — Funniest bit of the night. While it’s so easy for people to criticize others for their choices, it’s not always OK to do it to their faces, especially without some proof to back you up. Then, in the end, the message on corn syrup’s effects was pretty clear, at least as far as SNL is concerned.

Titanic Life Boat — Was that Alec Baldwin’s voiceover at the start of this sketch? Anyway, it was kinda-sorta funny. Then, again, a sketch flopped at the end. What the hell was going on?

Loved the monologue, even before he busted out “Tomorrow” and the signs. The Canadian thing was strange (they actually sounded more Minnesota than Canada), but the moose producer did make me laugh out loud. And I was waiting to see if Zach was going to shave his beard again during the last musical number but the mohawk was a surprise!

Loved the open but thought the show sucked. There is a difference between entertainment and just pushing the boundires for the sake of pushing boundries. I just think Zach comes across as someone with a chip on his shoulder who is angry at the world and wants to push buttons merely for the sake of pushing buttons. I don’t think he is funny.
