What show do you regret missing? – Quibbling Siblings

Every week brother and sister team Bob and Debbie take on a new topic. This week we discuss which shows, past and present, we regret missing out on.

Bob:

It’s impossible to watch every show on television. At least, I’m pretty sure it is. I think all of us TV fans have one show (or more) that we feel really terrible about never catching. I know for me, it’s Dexter. I’ll get there eventually, I’m sure, maybe even this summer, but until now, I haven’t seen so much as single frame of this show. Everyone I talk to loves it, and I even know a few folks who border on obsession when it comes to TV’s favorite serial killer.

If we’re talking about older or “classic” shows I would have to admit that I never watched The West Wing. I’m not quite sure why I skipped it. I think it had something to do with it airing after ten o’clock in the pre-DVR age. I don’t think I realized just how much of a juggernaut the show was until I was researching past Emmy winners and saw that it won Best Drama four years in a row. That’s pretty crazy.

My question for you is: what show do you regret missing?

Debbie:

If you asked me this a season or two ago, I would have said Bones. It’s sort of a running joke in our house. We dropped it mid-way through the first season because Keith just couldn’t stand how unrealistic the technology was. Yeah, I married that guy. Then, when we started hearing about how good it was, I wanted to watch and Keith didn’t and I really don’t get a vote since I go to bed so mush earlier than he does; there’s no time for me to watch shows that he doesn’t. So I missed Bones and I don’t imagine I’ll ever catch up on six seasons, and the way it seems to be going now, I think I’d just be disappointed. Likewise, I think I missed the Smallville boat at this point, but I’m sure it’s a show I’d enjoy a lot.

I definitely regret dumping The Good Wife and Fringe so early on, for no good reason other than lack of time. But those I know I’ll catch someday. And I’m toying with the idea of catching up with Pretty Little Liars … there have been too many Veronica Mars comparisons for me not to check it out.

I’m just a little put out that Supernatural didn’t come to mind for you. How often do I need to rave about this show for you to take me seriously? Really, all the cool kids are doing it.

Oh, I’m that nearly-obsessed-with-Dexter person you’re talking about, aren’t I? I can’t help it, I love that murdering rascal.

Bob:

Oddly enough, you are not the Dexter fanatic that I was thinking of. I am fully aware of how much you and Keith love the show, though. I have some friends who go crazy for it. It’s really amusing watching them talk to each other after a new episode airs. It is very reminiscent of listening to me talk after a new episode of Lost.

Fringe is one that definitely sounds like it has gotten really interesting since I gave up on it. With that being said, there was just too much about the show that didn’t work for me. I don’t think I’ll be heading back to check it out any time soon. And, yes, Supernatural didn’t come to mind for me. It seems like something I would like, and it certainly has a rabid genre fanbase (which is a usually a good sign for my tastes). Maybe I’ll get to it some day.

Debbie:

Well, you know who you can borrow the DVDs from. And no, I don’t mean me … the first season, anyway. I lent that one to the other sister a couple of years ago, and let’s just say she’s not on it like white on rice.

Why have my siblings forsaken me?

I’m sure Keith couldn’t get past the 3D Imager thing that Angela used. It has since gone away.

But, I’m with you. The show has done so much to disappoint me lately that it really has skewed my opinion on the earlier seasons (Yes, this makes me a hypocrite … I’ve criticized others, Keith in particular, for doing the same thing with BSG).

That being said … Bob: Run, don’t walk, to The West Wing. It had a rough go mid to late it its run, but truly, it was so brilliant in the beginning, and solid when it ended, that it makes up for it.

The 3D imager was pretty atrocious. I don’t blame Keith one bit. The writers were smart to dump it.

OH! If that imager is gone, I may be OK! I think I can actually watch the show now!

… I’m serious! That just did it for me. I could not stand that thing.

Yeah, Keith, it didn’t make it into the second season. Angela, though, is still a computer whiz (despite being a beatnick) and can do physic modeling on the fly a little too impressively.

I am with you on West Wing!!!! I need to start!!

Also, I watched the first season of Fringe and loved it, but for some reason didn’t watch it after that. I think it’s because I was doing the netflix thing, and it wasn’t available yet and it was already in the middle of season 2 so I didn’t want to miss anything. Now it’s on the queue!

Other regrets? Hmmm. Maybe In Treatment. I’ve heard that was a good show.

Rachel, I’m sure you’ve already heard this, but if you missed the 2nd and 3rd seasons of “Fringe” you’re missing a much better show than it was during the first. We loved the hell out of it during the first season, but now we salivate for each new episode. You should get after catching up on it. You won’t be disappointed!

For me, I regret not watching Buffy and then Angel when it was on. I have gone back and watched the first three seasons of Buffy. I hope to watch the rest at some point. But, I don’t think it is the same experience watching now.

Justified is a current show that I wish I had kept watching. I watched the first 2 eps and then it conflicted with other shows and so I stopped and never caught up.

I’m right there with you on Buffy and Angel. I’ve never seen a single episode of either, but I just know I’d love the heck out of them.

These days, thanks to the internet, I try to give almost every current show I’ve heard anything good about at least a shot. On top of that, I’ve been able to catch up on most shows I missed the first time around and sounded like they could be interesting. If they prove themselves within the first few episodes, I’m usually hooked until I’ve seen all of it and then often buy it on DVD (some examples include The Wire and Veronica Mars). So I have a very large database of shows watched.

That said, I have yet to give a serious viewing to The Sopranos or The X-Files, and it may be a long time before I get to either one (if ever). There are just too many other shows I want to get to first, or great shows I already own that I’ll want to watch again. I guess those two iconic shows in particular seem too dated, or like too much of a time commitment.

We didn’t have HBO when The Sopranos first came out–so missed it originally. However, it was one of the purchases and viewings of the entire DVD collection that was worth the price. In fact, other than the large pieces of time needed to view each season–it is one of the few DVD collections of missed shows that we found worth the price. Adam S., I would highly recommend that you take the time to check it out. One nice thing, is that it is a show that really hasn’t become dated.
