Diary of a True Blood virgin – Worst. Funeral. Ever.

After a bit of a hiatus, I'm going back to 'True Blood' to start off the summer. Because nothing says summer better than murder, sex and psychic guilt, right? That and vampires.

It has been a while since my last True Blood post. I have a reason for the hiatus besides taking on some mid-season shows at the beginning of the year, but I’ll explain that later. I’m excited to get back to the Diary because this disc ended in one heck of a cliffhanger — and this is coming from a show that ends practically every episode in a cliffhanger!

1.5 “Sparks Fly Out”

“Giving vampire blood to Jason is like giving Ho-Hos to a diabetic. You know he can’t control himself!”

In the last few months, I’ve heard so much hate towards Bill as a character. No one seems to like him, in the same way not even Twilight fans like Bella. Just from the eight episodes I’ve seen so far, I don’ t mind Bill, and this is the episode I like him the most. How can you not feel bad for a guy whose fidelity towards his wife caused his cursed immortality?

The Descendants of the Glorious Dead meeting was probably the most interesting scene for me so far. Bon Temps might be ready to run Bill out of town, but they also have a strong connection to their history; Bill is a part of that whether they like it or not. It’s during the meeting that they start to respect him as a Southern soldier and as a former citizen. I especially liked the war vet who related to Bill.

I’m realizing that I could name every Diary post “Jason is an idiot.” He almost lost his manhood after O.D.ing on vampire blood, so what does he do next? Take more, of course! I’m liking Tara more and more for being smart enough to not take his words seriously. It is so like Jason to be scummy even in the middle of enlightenment.

And of course, we get the big ending with Sookie’s Gran murdered. Why do I have a feeling all the characters I like/are reasonable are going to get killed?

1.6 “Cold Ground”

“What the fuck is it with white people and jello? I don’t understand.”

So, here’s the big reason for my Virgin Diary hiatus. Around the time I watched these episodes originally, it was the first anniversary of my own grandmother’s death. We were very close, and the few days encompassing her death and funeral were some of the worst days of my whole life. I was thinking of her a lot while watching this episode, which was not very pleasant. I put myself in Sookie’s shoes; I just couldn’t imagine having to mourn the woman who raised you while your whole community telepathically told you it was your fault, all the while wearing crocodile smiles. The episode was almost painful to watch because of that, which is why I avoided writing this particular diary. At this point, I hate Jason. Actually, my initial reaction to him hitting Sookie was, “The nerve of that asshole!” I don’t see him having any redeeming qualities. I know a character doesn’t have to have good qualities, but that doesn’t mean I have to like his douchebaggery.

I’m surprised by the Lettie Mae storyline … I wasn’t expecting her to be anything but a mean drunk. From what I know of the latter TB seasons — which isn’t much — any and all fantasy/scifi forces can come into the show at any time. Tara and Sam have some powerful chemistry, so I have to see more of them together. Speaking of “together,” we finally get to see Sookie and Bill get together! Sort of … the beginning of getting it on, I guess …

1.7 “Burning House of Love”

“Suppose she gets pregnant. How in the world can she nurse a baby with fangs?”

… And now we see part two of Sookie’s first time. Honestly, it wasn’t as passionate as I thought it would be — maybe because I’ve seen later clips of the two of them together that are more intense. Plus, the love scene wasn’t very long to begin with. That being said, I’d rather see a short love scene with those two then any love scene with Jason. Speaking of Jason, what a freaking hypocrite. When he tried to snatch his family’s silver so he could buy more V, I wanted to reach into my television and smack him in the face. After hitting Sookie in the last episode, how could he possibly have the nerve to steal from her? But I know, we’re not supposed to like him. A part of me wanted him to get killed trying to score V at the vampire bar, but I knew we wouldn’t get rid of him that easily. I have no idea what is up with Amy, but maybe she’ll knock some smart into him.

Again, Lettie Mae’s storyline is interesting. Did she really get fixed? Will she stop drinking? Does this mean Tara also has a demon? And most importantly, will we see more Tara/Sam love scenes? Also, can they finally just show that Sam is a werewolf already? I know enough about the show to know he’s probably a werewolf, but they still haven’t come out and said it. Get on with it, True Blood!

And now, the big cliffhanger — did Bill get burned to ashes?! Well, since he’s still in the show, I’m guess that’s a big no. But what actually happened will have to wait for disc four with “Fourth Man in the Fire.” Oh, and I’ve only just now noticed that every episode title is the name of a song from that episode.
