The League – Seth Rogen’s Dirty Randy returns the status quo

Football season is back, which means 'The League' is back, which means I am a happy reviewer. Andre the floutist, Ruxin the champion and the official introduction of Dirty Randy ... it's good to be back!

- Season 3, Episode 1 - "The Lockout"

God, I missed this show. The League just has this special quality to it — a balance between wit, chemistry and occasional craziness. It’s easily one of the most underrated comedies on TV, and one of the shows I was most excited to see again this fall. And come on, if the series had ended with Ruxin as the evil champion of fantasy football, that would have been heart-breaking.

It was certainly interesting seeing him rub his victory in the noses of his compatriots. It’s both shocking and yet not surprising at all to see he got his fantasy players to be in the Shiva Bowl Shuffle. What I can’t believe is that the rest of the league got through the summer without murdering the megalomaniac. They might be saints. Well OK, they aren’t saints. Can anyone judge them for taking a redo when Ruxin’s name got pulled first for the draft?

Pete and Jenny individually training Kevin like a pet was pretty damn funny, but it went to a whole other level when Taco’s “high-notizing” actually works. Stephen Rannazzisi‘s faint is over-the-top in the best sense of the word. It’s mid-sentence, and his face just before hitting the floor was priceless. My favorite character is still Taco, if only because of his blissful ignorance. If he hadn’t gone on a crazy adventure during the summer, I would have been disappointed. I felt a  little guilty cracking up at the subtle joke that Taco was hanging out with the Taliban right around the death of Osama.

Dirty Randy was mentioned by Rafi last season as a professional porn scouter and kind of an asshole, but Seth Rogen really brought him to life … whether we want him to or not. Rogen’s Randy fits perfectly into the strange, degenerate world of Rafi. I hope to see him come back in the future. The porno they made was just kind of funny on its own (kudos to the writers for having Andre’s porn equivalent named “Dr. No-Dick” and somehow lack genitals while pounding a sexy nurse), but what made it work was the league members literally locked out of their own draft thanks to their own prank. Oh, the hubris!

Speaking of hubris, germ-phobic Ruxin got his own personal comeuppance when his precious Shiva Bowl Ring got a starring role in the production, so to speak. I was worried going into this season that Ruxin’s ego would get to an unbearable size, but Dirty Randy brought everyone down a level to start the season. Well, everyone except a very confused Andre.

All the best quotes:

“Andre, when did you become a high school music teacher?” — Taco
“Actually, I’m a floutist.” — Andre
“You play the flout?” — Taco

“So, you’re in the Taliban now?” — Pete
“No, not anymore. Worst April of my life!” — Taco

“We’re not making any porno. We’re going to leave that up to the professionals.” — Pete
“Yeah, me and Dirty Randy!” — Rafi
“The dude that looks like an illiterate Wolverine?”  — Ruxin

Floutist is not a word. Its spelled flautist.
