Vampire Diaries – Who’s more powerful than Klaus?

Damon epitomized the title of this week's episode, 'Disturbing Behavior'; but then again, most of the characters were delightfully disturbing tonight.

- Season 3, Episode 4 - "Disturbing Behavior"

Why does a commenter from last week miss the days when Stefan tried out for the football team, when season three of The Vampire Diaries is so rich and complex? It’s admirable, the way the writers keep weaving in new little tidbits to deepen the mytharc. Back in the day when Stefan was tossing the pigskin, we thought Katherine was the Big Bad. Sure, she’s conniving, self-serving and sneaky, but she doesn’t even come close to being the Big Bad.

Now it looks like Klaus/Nick may not hold that title much longer either. Just a couple of weeks ago, I started feeling sympathy for him … you know you’re not evil enough when that happens. There’s something so natural the way the writers are humanizing him, particularly making him fear something. Yes, all-powerful (or so we thought) Klaus fears the mysterious Michael, and we’ve yet to find out why. What power does Mikael the vampire hunter have that can frighten an original hybrid?

Back to sneaky Katherine for a moment … I was completely fooled, thinking Elena was with Bonnie that whole time. Now that Katherine has the necklace, where’s the road trip she and Damon are going on? Because with Stefan and Klaus back in town, the fun’s going to be in Mystic Falls. I’m thinking about Elena, desperately trying not to admit her feelings for Damon … Stefan is totally going to see them kiss next week. You read it here first!

I’m glad that Jeremy told Bonnie about the Anna sightings. I feel really bad for Anna, but I’m not sure if I completely trust her either. What’s to make us believe she’s anymore trustworthy than Vicki? That may be the silliest thing I ever wrote, but I still feel like there’s something more there. This is The Vampire Diaries, after all.

This and that:

  • Oh Rebekah, you took the words right out of my mouth … well, almost. You say the modern woman dresses like a prostitute, I say lingerie. Potato, poh-tah-toe. …
  • “So, Mayor Lockwood called your gay ex-husband to torture your vampire daughter.” – Damon
“Yes. I’ve been keeping him detained to make sure the vervain’s out of his system, so you could, you know.” – Sheriff
“You want me to just kill him?” – Damon
    “No, Damon, he’s Caroline’s father.” – Sheriff
“Sounds like a douchebag to me.” – Damon
“Just because you and I are on OK terms doesn’t mean I’m suddenly a big advocate for your lifestyle.” – Sheriff
“Is that what you told him once you got divorced?” – Damon
  • Wow, I did not expect Katherine to kill Gloria, just as she found out the doppelganger isn’t dead. Part of me feels like having someone know that would be tense fun, part of me was relieved.
  • Nor did I expect Damon to kill Alaric just because he pissed him off. I didn’t realize how much I missed dark Damon until he came back.
  • Alaric’s going to shake up that council … very nice.

I am the “commenter from last week” and I will tell you why I miss the old days. :)

It’s not so much that I miss the simpler plots par-sey, it’s that I miss the show having a point. As in something that they are all fighting towards that lasts more than two episodes. I just feel that things are starting to get redundant, and loosing focus. Now a days it feels like one episode we are all about this, then two episodes later we are all about something else, and nothing is ever resolved, one thing just flows into the next. Like now, what are we hoping for/working towards? Helping Stefan?(ps. – why bother when he is just going to fall off the wagon sometime next season anyway) Killing Klaus? I thought so, but now it looks like there is a new bady.

Which brings me to my second issue – bad guys. You put it perfectly: “Now it looks like Klaus/Nick may not hold that title much longer either.” EITHER. As in not one single bad guy the show has seen in two and a half seasons has stayed bad! They have all ended up with the good guys in one way or another. Damon(bad guy for a little while anyway), Katherine, Anna, Her Mother(who’s name I forget), John, Isobel, Elijah, Klaus, and now Michael? Hell, even Caroline used to be a bitch, and now we’re cool with her too. I’m all for character development and growth, but do they all have to develop and grow the same way?

Don’t get me wrong, I do love the show, it just frustrates me sometimes. Sorry if I upset anyone, I didn’t mean to. :)

Mari, thanks for chiming in! I don’t think you upset anyone (it’s just a fictional show, after all … although that Christine from last week seems a little obsessed….) but it’s hard for me to long for season one when they just keep throwing the OMG moments at us. I like that the characters have grown older and deeper and that there are more and more layers to the supernatural world that just keep getting revealed to us. I agree, it’s not perfect, but the ride is so much fun and ultimately pretty satisfying.
